For any tabletop fans out there, I'd love to get some commentary from other players or GMs about the newest book. I think it actually has a chance of overcoming Pathfinders foothold in the market it looks like a nice return to the spirit of classic DnD.

3.5 was my last real go at DnD too.... I have skimmed the new book. Seemed nice. I'd love to get a group going again.

4e looked like it was trying to be an mmo, so I stopped even looking at core books.

4e looked like it was trying to be an mmo, so I stopped even looking at core books. I concur. if I wanted to play a game where i couldnt make a character to fit my idea because it's not optimal, I wouldn't be playing a tabletop game. Freedom to screw up is the point.

4e was a fucking travesty. 5 e is back towards 3.5 and pretty good, less steampunky in core book design. Pathfinder is really well written though and I am glad WOTC got crushed with 4 e.

i've been running a campaign on next for a couple months. it doesn't have the chintzy feel of 4e, which is nice. The modules aren't terrible either.

After 3.5e and Pathfinder my group go into World of Darkness and Warhammer 40k dark heresy / rogue trader. Out of all the systems I've tried after dnd I probably like FantasyFlightGames Warhammer system the most. Your stats are between 0 - 100, roll a d100 and you have to get your stat or lower, skills and traits and tactics modify the number. Bingo bango you're good to go. Very easy bookkeeping.

Needlessly complicated can be good when you want there to be something new in a system one's been using for years.
I took a look at 5e and it looks fun, potentially. Tieflings get enough special effect powers that I want to play a tiefling bard and run atmospheric concerts. Weapons/armor system could use some character, and magic items weren't really developed at all last time I checked. The character-oriented mechanics - inspiration is it? - were a nice touch, a small touch of FATE without being very invasive. Easy to come up with some ideas on how to expand/alter it for a bit more dynamic approach to using ingame.
They did some good things with this edition, it ain't perfect but I like it so far.
Unfortunately, I was not able to get my group to try it, not having enough carrots beyond 3.5 for early adoption to seem worth it. Instead, the most recent system I managed to get games to start in was Pokemon Tabletop Universe. Which is fun but very much not the same thing.
