And I can't even count how many times they pick some douchebag for a role call. I remember years ago maybe 10 years ago I put in a templar app. The guy they ended up choosing over me retired after 2 weeks and did literally nothing. Frustrated the hell out of me cause I've always wanted to try templar but instead some guy who has played 4 other templars gets it and just retires like it's nothing. Meh. Shitty system. Especially with Northern Templars, I'd noticed, during my tenure up there as a Legionnaire Sergeant. People would come in, act like it was great, here's whats going to happen, etc etc... and then never log in again. The stress of the role, perhaps, and I know staff will, when given the choice between someone who has PLAYED a Templar, and someone who HASN'T, have to pick the one who hasn't... But will all this request tool tracking and stats on when they are active in game and on the GDB, don't they have a pretty good idea who has a good track record of being around, and not storing a sponsored role 2 weeks in? And don't they have a way of figuring out WHY people store 2 weeks in?

The problem with sponsored roles that don't pan out is player expectations vs. staff expectations. When these things don't match up, there's going to be problems.
For example if I go into a role thinking I'm going to do all kinds of cool things and I'm trying to talk with my staff members and they either don't respond, put me off or simply just tell me know. This can be discouraging. Also if the role isn't anything like I imagined, taking too much time and/or just isn't any fun. That too is a problem.
Staff don't always communicate what they want to their sponsored role characters, or don't give them the information they need to succeed. I haven't had any experience with this any time recently but I still wonder if some staff members know themselves what they can do or what/how to communicate the things they expect or want to their sponsored role player, or things that can help them. Sometimes I think it's just expected, something you learn and if you don't know how then them's the break. High learning curve et al.
Other times staff and player meld very well together and things go great and the role is a huge success, usually bringing popularity to a clan/orginazation/area that might be involved.

Also, how can you hope to change anything by not doing anything? Wouldn't the way to be the change TO apply for sponsored roles? Please excuse me for trying to be practical, but what is refusing to participate supposed to accomplish?

Uh it doesn't accomplish anything. I don't play anymore but when I did play I refused to special app because I knew I would never get anything with my reputation. It was pointless. A waste of time. You can't be the change you want to see when those running everything refuse to change anything.

If no one wanted the role, I'd hope the imms would take the hint and refocus their time on another portion of the game.

Dude it's been a long time since they've gotten it "right". The utter lack of motivating leadership, intelligent discussions, and actual fun to be had in the game has just become a huge reason I don't play anymore. I'm sure plenty of people are having a blast on the game but I am also fairly sure that pretty much only a handful of them are 17 year vets like myself. Maybe it's just the nature of humans but I don't see anything exciting about the game anymore.

Tuluk is dead.
I had someone tell me they used to basically notice the last templar move from bar to bar looking for people to RP with. You have more Rp opportunities in the rinth and redstorm then you do in tuluk at certain times in the day. Just look at the role call, a templar role and basically someone for them to RP with so they don't get bored in the first couple of days.
Applying for that stuff would take away valuable people from where the game is still alive, which is basically allanak.
And I don't believe you'd get to do what you want if you played these roles. Spy plot is a good example of the only plots the game sees these days. Staff railroad plots where you basically have very little say and the conclusion is per-determined regardless of what happens.

How much you wanna bet they'll drop the "no screwing commoners" clause for nobles as a last ditch effort to fill roles before closing tuluk's houses down for good?

There's some word Nyr may become the nakki staffer again. That may revitalize the north. you know, with refugees. i wonder what will happen to Tuluk's falsely documented culture if it's true that everyone playing in nak will have to flee there.
