I believe armor helped reduce damage. My dwarf has been filled with arrows before and walked away fine. Also - Strength seems to be a -huge- factor in hitting. Armor and weapons help, but if you have enough strength, it seems alot easier to hit something. I've had dwarf warriors less than 20 days played murder the FUCK out of 50 day + ranger and warriors, human, elf or breed.
