If I was to travel from Allanak to Tuluk how would I go about doing it, how long will it take, how dangerous will it be and what can I expect to happen? Would any old maps help or has the world changed enough for them to not be useful?

Find out ic.
I'm dead serious, this is just one of those things. Just go prepared and don't get ezmode escorted. That would be the most reward in exp.

If you're a Arma newb, you should really just burn through a handful of characters just exploring the gameworld.
There are players who have been playing Armageddon for nearly a decade who have no idea how to get from place to place.

Sadly for you I do not know viable routes with the volcano but basically it takes 90 to 120 minutes depending on mounts, weather, and shit like that. You used to be able to do Nak to Luirs with 1 beetle run, no rest, then Luirs to Tuluk with 1 beetle run no rest. So if you started just before dawn you could do it all in about 30 minutes if you stabled inbetween.
Just hire the Byn to escort you, log it, go through direction echoes you'll get and then repeat it a few times until you get it. Or just ask someone for landmarks, cause that's how you navigate the wilds.

Exploring by yourself is probably the only real way you will learn proper. You've got maps that you can download here, this will keep you 'roughly' oriented.
Giving you a n,e,e,n,e,w,s,n direction will not help you. Moreso, most likely will get you killed. Because 3-4 consecutive fails in direction sense (Where you go to a random direction and do not know which direction you went to), and you are "lost". That's where knowledge of landmarks and such like goes in.
My advice. Join Byn, or Kurac, or any other hunting house or indie hunting group and as time passes, you will get to be the one in the lead. Its important to be the one in the lead. If you're following, you will never learn as good as you would by choosing directions yourself.

Would any old maps help or has the world changed enough for them to not be useful? Depends on which way you go as to how dangerous it is, but if your pretty new, it you are taking a chance. Not saying not to do it, it is the only real way to learn. The old maps will help with some of the landmarks, but a lot has changed, so they won't get you there without some additional exploring.

Its more important to know the local hazards than the shape of the map. Some of the hazards move around, or are conditional, or only an issue at certain power levels. Kurac or the Byn will teach and practically show much of this information. Salarr or Kadius might work if you get the right players also in the House at the same time.
Until you know exactly where you are going and the risks, go no where without a mount.

Warrior/Scavenger is a good guild/sub to go about the world in. Climb and Direction sense are very helpful to explore some places. See what neat things you can forage too. Ranger is also okay, but they take way longer to reach the level of safety warriors have.
Max-Master Parry and Shield-use. This takes 3-8 days played or so. Work up direction sense and climb. Direction sense might take a bit.
Then you're basically ready to explore a lot of places in the game. At least half of it. If you ever need to run, then you're combat skills should cover it. Although you'd be able to kill any of the commonly hunted animals at that point.
Unless you don't care about spending a handful of characters just dicking about and traveling wildly.

I was in this boat not so long ago.
Biggest piece of advice I would advise. If you're impatient and rolled a ranger.
Keep your mount well rested, especially if the area is new to you. Having tons of movement in reserve will save your ass so many times.
Also be prepare to abuse the fuck out ranger quit.

Water and a well and consistently rested mount go a helluvah long way in exploring. Truth. And for gods sakes look before you move. You don't see a chasm three rooms away so don't spamwalk if you haven't been there. Also sunslits. Wear them.
The first time I made the 'crossing' solo I was smug for a week.

Dat feel you feel when broken wagons, trapped mounts, gick, gith, and delf country, no water, no food, no friends and you still manage to hike out of it and survive.
Byn escorts are for pussies
