If this is too simple for the intent of the board, then I apologize, but I have no earthly clue how/where one would go to learn lock picking everything I try says it's too advanced for me.

Some lock picks have bonuses, so if you can get your hands on two of them have on in each hand and try picking like that. Crappy apartments have crappy locks. I think the lowest level ones in Allanak were outside the Bard's Barrel.

Look around in poor areas of whatever city. As a beginner your likely to break picks; you want maximum bonuses.
The new Gaj rooms might be the worst locks now? I'm not sure.

Yes, the new Gaj rooms seem to be the best. The ones outside the Bard's Barrel (Reds) are gone. I recommend renting the cheapest apartment you can find, then while INSIDE your apartment, try utilizing lockpick to unlock your own door. I hear you get better success with two lockpicks. Maybe that'll help you not crit-fail and break a lockpick. Worth a shot. Remember, once you get a failure, wait an hour or so before trying again. If you don't have the coin to rent an apartment, there are a number of houses around Allanak that have doors. Don't try to lock yourself INSIDE. I would laugh my ass off if you successfully picked the lock and locked the door, then broke your lockpick while trying to unlock the door to let yourself out. This is why it's best to practice on your -own- apartment door. From inside.

Dont spend all your coin on a lockpick, thinking it will bring you to wealth and comfort. There is a good chance it will break on your very first failure. I 'have' had burglars who mastered pick lock without breaking a single lock pick, but it is a 'rare' thing. Generally, you should feel its safe to assume that you will break the minimum of 4-6 lock picks before you hit master. And since most apartments with shitty locks will rarely have anything of value to really take and sell, assume you will only profit properly at advanced/master levels.
If there is no one providing you picks and you're relying on NPCs only to purchase pick locks. Those picks for about 60 to 300 sid each. In other words, this is not a cheap skill to train in.

Yeah, I can already see that, if I can branch pick making though, that seems like it could bring in some sid right?
"A cut above average, you find this lock too difficult to spring."
Is this a positive (Read: skill gaining) failure message?

Failure is when you fail to pick the lock.
Not when it's too difficult for you.
So to answer your question, No.

Thanks, I guess I'll keep searching for something that works.

You can also relock doors and fail.
I would seriously rent the cheapest apartment you can find and practice in there.
