Does it take Backstab to deliver a poison to an opponent, or can you do it with a successful attack?
For example, if I had a warrior with a poisoned knife, would they be able to poison their opponent successfully?

yup
poison is based on whether you hit the opponent, whether backstab or regular attack

Poison, no matter what poison, is never a guarantee. Theirs a chance it won't take no matter the weapon or the method it was used to deliver.

It will still be on the knife. I've seen fights where the poison never took and the knife now had blood on it but I could still see the sheen.

Are there cases where the poision was delivered, they just saved against it? So you hit, and it is not on the knife anymore, but they are not poisioned?
