that's interesting to know, Tox', and I bet 'ARM staff showing a respectful degree of restraint' isn't a comment made here every day ..lol
Thanks for the honest opinion. I wasn't expecting all this, it's just settled me down so much.
Coming into this gameworld for the first time, and at my age - I'm not young by any means - is a bewildering experience. I didn't even know it existed! So it has been quite a learning curve, and goes some way to explaining why I have been looking at so many variants.

yes, I'm understanding that now and this thread has helped me see it all in a different light, with a bit of perspective. I abandoned Sindome because one of the staff, (who seemed to be universally hated,) got snappy with me one too many times - that was within a month. So I guess most MUDs have at least one. even if everybody chews nyr da fuck out , he's bettr dese days. I dnt think any rpi has an infallible staff. arm's staff not actually 2 badd, u just get one or two dat occasional make you facepalm |

Yes, I formed that opinion after a while. I wonder how it would evolve if some of those on here, passionate enough about it took over. That could have interesting results.

ill admit i wuz mad wen i got teh idea staf didnt apreshiate me. so. i wint 2 anothur rpi and teh staf ther basikly browt down teh iron fist uv fisty judjment withen a weke r 2. onestly arm staf showz a respectibul degry uv restraynt wen deling with mee. i hav sene staf on othur mudz go fuking insane and just shit al ovur teh hole plairbass tehn pul teh plug on teh hole theeng just bcuz theengz arent turnyng owt exaktly az hopd. Yeah, Arm staff has a code of conduct they sometimes sorta adhere to. It might be loosely policed due to lack of enforcement mechanisms, but it's better than not having one at all. |

The Hell split was caused by a myriad of issues leading uparlmore deciding to create a private clubhouse for his friends.
Only after two shards, immense amounts of bitching, the exodus of the goons, and (here's the kicker) progs starting to listen to the community, did Hell recover.
In all cases, the split was good for Hell in the long run. The understanding that there was competition led to improvements.
That being said, these are two very different games. Hell can and has been successful with 0 prog oversite or rule enforcement for some time (the GriefMoo project). Arm has no chance in that.
But there's at least 7 dudes here on this forum who would take up admin/storyteller slots in the ShadowArm, so it would just be a matter of time before things were set. Reworking staff responsibility as it went along would cut back on actual obligations, anyhow.
It's a nice thing to think about.

I think it would take a lot of work to get people to play an alternate version of Arm for more than a couple days. I imagine people would just use it to do all the things they're not allowed to in the current game then get tired of it, like that Arm clone that supposedly ran for a bit 10+ years ago.

I think something like that could potentially work. Really, it's situational. With ApocalypseMUD, no one really took it seriously, at all. For instance, I submitted an application for "the half-giant penis."
But with the way things are now, I think people would play, especially if there was a story and if it wasn't an EXACT Arm clone. Maybe an alternate timeline or otherwise altered story... Maybe with Allanak as the ruins of a city. I don't know.

(In two months of looking through this forum I am still undecided if you are all players who love the game or players who hate the game. Usually both, and a good number of us are also former staff. So can I ask, if anyone has laboured this far through the post, which of those mentioned would you favour? and as a player who seems to have missed ARM's 'golden age' by about a decade, would you stay with it or not? Arm serves as an excellent case study in how not to run a game. If you're not sure how to quickly determine if a MUD is fucked up or you're considering making your own, I'd say keep playing. If you're still having fun, keep playing. You can't make a difference, so understand that when you hit a brick wall OOCly, your only options are to either turn around or keep running into it until you die. Stay away from the GDB whenever it can be avoided. Although this forum has its issues, those issues are limited to the forum. I don't really want to be a guard, or a soldier or anything like that, I do want a degree of independence, maybe find one or two others so we can work as a team. I'm glad you said ARM is good for that, I would like to stay with it, but if I was told it's a waste of time, I would have walked.I wont feel I'm wasting my time. You've been amazing here. Your goals are totally doable on Arm, and could (and should!) be fun, IMO. This is especially true if you're new to the game and the coded map and beastie NPCs will be a surprise to you. Exactly. gamerguurl, as long as you don't get fooled into believing you can "be the change" or "make a difference" and stick with just engaging the world as an individual, you'll enjoy yourself. |

If by that you mean make some kind of guns blazing, hi-impact on the gameworld, no that's not me at all. I just want a gameworld life where I can make a living by hunting/exploring/trading, with an ever present risk from the local wildlife and the potential of permadeath as a runner-up prize. I am now thinking that I'll stay under the radar if I do that, which is fine. I'm good with it all now.
