If you have a skill which branches from a guild's starting skill list and you take a sub-guild which also gives you that skill do you then unlock it's potential skill cap from having branched it before *actually* branching the skill? this could be asked in another way, do you get *any* benefit from "branching" a skill a second time, ie higher skill cap, the ability to branch from that skill. What if you branch city sneak but got wildy sneak from yous sub-guild and thus had it the whole time, would you have had city sneak before you "branched" it? sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum, wasn't sure where it should have gone

I know if you're a ranger/thief, you can master sneak without ever branching it from... listen? But I don't know if you have the ability to sneak in the wild with it.
I guess that answers one part of your question, even if it's not that helpful without knowing the second part.

The subguild will give the skill early. Unless the subguild has a higher cap (this would be unusual), there wouldn't really be any more benefit.
On a separate note, IIRC there's some issues with city vs. wilderness hide in that they are the same skill, the only thing that makes them difference is one's guild. I don't know the extent of this problem, I haven't really tested it, but I think stealthy guilds (assassin/burglar/pickpocket) are going to have problems in the wilderness and rangers are going to have problems in the city. I don't know where this leaves everyone else. Maybe someone else knows more about this.

Many times the subguild version of the skill not only caps lower, but also starts higher, and so combining them will result not only in a higher starting skill level, but also not having to branch a skill if it's a skill that your guild would branch naturally. Sneak and wilderness hide are not two different skills, but rely on penalties in the incorrect terrain with the same skill. So, yes, a ranger who is, for instance, a tailor, will have city penalties, but a ranger who has a subguild (ext subguilds are the only ones I can think of who offer both sneak AND hide) with sneak and hide and hunt, will be able to do so in and out of cities with the same success and no penalties, much like an assassin/hunter vs an assassin tailor. I hope that helps!
