Awesome, so. You can decompose items into smaller versions of themselves (Rock _> smaller bits of rock etc...) Is this a separate hidden skill? I've heard skinning factors in the past (or is that just organs etc...). I guess tools and stuff also help?

The process of say, turning a blocky piece of whatever into head sized or hand sized pieces actually uses the forage skill, oddly enough.

It is affected by tool use?

Also, does the forage skill get a fail-chance-skill-increase roll for this action?

Also, does the forage skill get a fail-chance-skill-increase roll for this action? Yeah, I've increased forage simply by breaking down rocks before.

Yes, turning head-sized rocks into hand-sized ones uses the foraging skill. It's how sponsored GMH people skillup foraging without grebbing themselves.
You can also use the salvage command to, say, turn your shirt into some ragged cloth. Help salvage explains it better than I can.

Salvage can be used on certain clothing to get scraps of cloth (poor bandages), or scraps of leather (armor making / repair).
Salvage can be used on some rocks to create smaller rocks (good way to get sling ammo). I've had varying results with this on the same item, so it's possibly also based off forage. (ie, 1 piece one salvage, 3 pieces the next.)
Forage can be used to break rocks into smaller rocks via the 'craft' command.
Skinning can be used to separate 'pile' items into individual pieces. (ie organ piles, bone piles, scrab leg piles, etc). Can raise your skill, so it's way GMH employees grind their skinning.
I believe forage also factors into obsidian/glass mining, the way that lumberjacking effects chopping down trees. I haven't proven this, or varified that forage can be raised via obsidian mining, so take with a grain of salt.
Most tools have a pretty implicit usage. (A pan is for cooking, a saw is for woodworking, a chisel is for stone crafting, a leatherworking knife is for leatherworking, a straightening wrench is for fletchery, etc.) One thing I'm not sure about, but have come to suspect is that certain tools may also lend bonuses to working with a material. ie, a chisel grants a bonus whether you're carving a statue or an obsidian longsword. Wondering if anyone can verify that?
