Pretty self explanatory. Specifically, the higher karma magickers. Don't plan on being gemmed.

There's not a right answer. It simply depends on what you want to do with your character, and what kind of magicker you are. If you plan on being ungemmed and live in the desert or an outpost, go for something with desert navigation, or scavenger for the food grebbin'. If you're going to stay in the city and cast in your apartment, do some kind of crafter so you have a source of income / a cover story.
(Note, if you sit in Allanak and spam cast in your apartment you WILL be discovered by the resident drovian gemmer and snatched off your barstool one day. This has been increasingly true since they lowered the karma requirement for Drov.)
Like any mundane class, pick a sub that either compliments your class, makes up for a specific weakness, or lends to your character concept.
On a side note: I die inside a little bit each time I see a krathi / jeweler. We get it, man...

Like Musashi says, pick one that compliments your class, makes up for weaknesses or lends to your character concept. I tend to go with scavenger when I can't settle on one, climb and food forage are helpful. Search is utterly useless though.

I'm not sure if that was supposed to be a pointed remark? Myself, I've only ever played 2 exts, both mundane. One one hand, I don't like to be the guy calling for more limitations, but things like Whiran/Slipknife should just be auto-nos. You didn't app that class because it fit your character background....

Those extended subguilds are just so gamebreaking.

Whiran/Slipknife requires you to have 9 karma. A sorcerer is easier then a whiran/slipknife.

Ah. I didn't realize that they were actually summing the costs. That's good, at least...

I dont think they are summing the costs. If they are, they are also applying the 3 pt range for specapps, assuming you qualify for the mage guild on its own.

I wonder if staff would let a smart half-giant fly if said half giant were to buff his wisdom far beyond racial AI....

I wonder if staff would let a smart half-giant fly if said half giant were to buff his wisdom far beyond racial AI.... I've seen ringed-out HGs in the past, and honestly, it kinda defeats the purpose. Most of the fun of playing a HG is allowing yourself to let your character be tricked/manipulated and having inappropriate reactions to grave situations.

Nilazi Slipknife would be a nasty combo. If you're looking for power/utility. Personally I'd go the low-key route. I'd pick a combo that would make people assume I was a non-magical noob. Like playing an Elkrosi/Rukkian Aggressor. Byn around a bit. Then, one day, when the odds look bad, letting loose with the magicks. Something like you've surrounded the Byn sarge, caught him off-guard, and while you're talking ransom I drop an earthquake/lightning whip. I think that would be a memorable "Oh shit!" moment for all involved. Most of the fun of playing a HG is allowing yourself to let your character be tricked/manipulated and having inappropriate reactions to grave situations. Too true, or on some rare occasion letting something upset you to the verge of a rampage. Raging a little but not being violent. Where people can tell there's still a chance of calming you down.
