Greetings!
Wondering what everyone's thoughts were on auto-mapping. This will be my second MUD, having played Wheel of Time as my first one. I've spoken to a few people here and they don't use the auto-mapping feature. I imagine it's got to be insanely hard to play that way, so looking for opinions on the subject.
Basically what I'm looking for is your thoughts on if it's THAT rewarding playing without the auto-mapping feature. I'm away of the basic maps provided on the site, so I'd use those. My fear would be navigating around in a town and, of course, getting lost, not knowing where I am/ended up.
Couldnt find any results via search... my apologies if I missed some.
Thank you!

->directions dung scraper drop off From here, you need to go: west;west;west;west;west;open gates;west;north;north;north;east;east;east;east;south;south;south;open gates;west;north;north;north;north;north;north;

Basically just speedwalk everywhere without effort. Edit: Of course, yeah, you wind up going outside the city of whatever.

Maybe its just me, but I don't find it overly complicated to get by with out an auto mapper.
Its actually a bit more rewarding to actually figure out where stuff is, learn my own preferred paths.
I've used maps as little as possible, no more then as a reference point, or orientate my position
Cities aren't so bad, once you figure out the general direction of what you are looking for, after a couple of days you'll have it down pat.
Out side? Some stuff gets confusing, but for the most part, after a couple of days, and if you play it smart. It's not very difficult to remember where to go.
Sometimes you'll be off a couple of rooms, or be not so quiet sure where to find something again. This is normal. You'll get it, if you play in the same consistent area.
Also logs are your friend, I keep logs of all my sessions, helps me remember stuff my character would, locations, names, events.
Actually the best part? Don't be afraid to get lost, some of my best RP/game moments was getting lost and then falling into a scene, or a scene being created because my character stumbled into an alley way they shouldn't, or a cave.
Maps make it boring, and really don't do the game world justice.

Word to the wise, using maps is a crutch.
Knowing the gameworld by heart is a great survival tool.
