everyones likely seen some form of climbing gear, archery gear, stealth gear. i find myself wondering exactly how much they do for you, and if there are negative aspects assosciated with using sneak gear outside its intended environment, or if you can mix and match, and possibly overcome not being trained to sneak and hide in a particular environemnt with the right gear, say, a burgler without a subguild with outdoor sneak wearing all scrub gear, would they be able to effectively sneak outdoors? can you mix and match different sets to get bonuses to sneak anywhere, or is this not encouraged due to being unrealistic?

The gear is just for flavour, man. You can hide wearing ANY sneak gear in the wilderness or city, whether or not the description says it is for urban or rural environments. Imms may animate if you are wearing scrub camo in the city etc, but mostly they CBF. The penalty isn't so bad that you won't be able to hide in the wrong environment reasonably well if you are maxxed out. But scan will still get ya, unlike maxxed hide and gear in your native environment.
