Hello!
As you can tell, I'm new here. I've had my encounters with the immortals and will be doing what I can to remain anonymous.
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but since it does involve code, I thought this would fit. Something I've never figured out or really had to deal with over time, due to my usual character preferences: survival in the south.
Food from NPCs costs a fortune, and I don't have the luxury of a friend who can bring in meals from the outside. How can someone without crafting skills earn enough coin to avoid starvation? Is there something you can forage beyond salt, for example, or something a non-crafter can make? Is there food that's both cheap and filling which I'm missing?

There are dried strips of meat in the butcher that used to be about 8 coins each. You can forage stone in various places, though I'm not going to post a complete list of them here. If someone wants some idea of specifics, feel free to message me. If you truly have no crafting skills and no way to make much of any coins, welcome to the Byn or the AOD (if you're combat heavy), the Guild or the Jaxa Pah (if you're sneaky), or any number of other clans within Allanak, as you have very little chance of surviving long, in my own experience, at least.

I'm sorry if I sound like I'm repeating what other people might have been telling you. But it is in my opinion, a big mistake to be on your own as your very first characters. It might be less exciting, it might be more constricting, but for your very first characters, join ... a ... fucking ... clan. As usual, Byn preferrable, or some merchant house, or anyone else really who is hiring. This will give you security in food/water/lodging department, as well as some guidance, to be able to figure all those little things out.
Otherwise, you will need 2-3-10 characters to figure things other new players learned on their first one.

As I said, my usual preferences just don't put me in this position. My character can't take the usual routes to free food, but I spoke with Anaiah some and discovered that I had an option I hadn't remembered. So, it appears my problem isn't so great after all!

Never, ever, ever play in the north. Unless you have southern character who is up there. Yes its harder, yes its harsher, but thats the way armageddon is supposed to be. The north is just a pale imitation of allanak and what armageddon is really about. Hurr muh unique culture tho - no, fuck you, the north fucking sucks and everyone knows it. Anyway.
There are multiple routes you could go, but it depends on how much of a purist you are. Scavenging shit is really easy. Especially in the rinth. Or learn a basic crafting skill, take one as a subguild, and sell to NPC's when you aren't selling to PCs. Some clans are cool, but personally I dont like how out of place with reality they seem. Clans are easymode, generally speaking. But they do have their perks.

This. Very much this. I really can't stress enough how much the North just totally fucks the game over. It completely deviates from canon and has some of the worst players the game has ever seen. Of course that coming from me is laughable on the staff/player side of Arm but I truly mean it. Tuluk really just needs to be completely burned to the ground and forgotten about. Hell it's happened like twice already.

How much of Tuluk has been retconned/drastically altered by a deus ex machina in like the last couple of years? Hlum nobility ran out and can no longer be discussed on penalty of death, Jihaen and Lirathan orders removed, the dumb 'shadow artist' system, etc.

I've played a few characters in Allanak, and I will admit my one long-lived character in the north had a much easier time surviving than any of my southerners. That said, I had foraging capacities, and could live off the land, so that was mainly due to me not having too high a cost of living. I suppose I just chimed in to say I think Shadow Artists are actually kind of a cool system. A pickpocket I played, largely due to my own ignorance, failed its way through life, because I went in blind. Now, was it a great learning experience? Sure. I could probably play a competent one now, especially with help from this board. But the idea of being sponsored, having a goal, a rank to aspire to, that to me is kind of cool.
The GDB has some obvious problems, and Nyr can be a bit stifling on the forums. That said, trying desperately not to reveal myself, he's been fair enough to me thus far. Maybe Arm is his way of having an ego trip. Maybe not. I don't know the man. But I will say that I think being dismissive of anything that isn't 'the Arm experience' sounds a bit elitist to me. I struggle sometimes with the mechanics of this game, which is a large influence why I come here. I like going into a game knowing what I'm dealing with, and planning my concept ahead of time. But I do try to play realistic characters. And while the north may be 'easy mode,' I've seen several things in this game that made my experience much easier. Playing a female character and playing a 'gicker, just to name a few. I wouldn't want these options removed from the game, though. Playing an ignorant pickpocket stumbling around the rift was an experience, but having a clear goal other than 'grind to eventual competency at what has supposedly has kept me alive to this point' sounds like fun too. With a bit of staff influence and a cool noble or merchant house, this could be a cool concept. I'd want to play one, anyways. I'd rather have my art be 'stealing' or 'death' than shoving 47 uncommon adjectives into a text line and calling myself a master bard. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I think maybe you guys are a little harsh. It may not always be in a direction you like, and you may find it stagnant, but I'd like to think most of the people working on the game have its health in mind when they make decisions. I might be naive, but I do know that both Nyr and JCarter have enchanced my experience. I wouldn't want either to suddenly disappear.
