Del's opinions on the Tuluki closing will be mandatory introductory learning for our refugee camp.

For anyone that follows my tomfoolery I know I haven't posted in some time. Been busy with IRL stuff.
No videos will be uplaoded for the next year or so unfortunately I am off to the oceans for an adventure. If anyone needs to shoot me a msg about any random mud/game stuff I can be reached on Facebook or delerak@hotmail.com

Back doing some videos if anyone is interested. I did a couple first looks at some muds from TMS requests.
Anything specific anyone here wants to see? I can talk about old times or tell stories or whatever. I have time to kill lately so take advantage while you can!

Here's the two new first looks I did. ironically one is New Worlds who tends to post a ton on TMS but his game doesn't seem that bad (though the who list is insanely inflated), and the other is a DragonLance grinder pretty much stock ROM.

One thing I'd definitely pay some attention to would be Delerak's How-To Host a Mud.
A few of us are sort of considering taking the "if you don't like, make your own" option when it comes to mudding.
Any sorts of tips, comments, advice, and whatnot...always a good read.
One of our group actually was on Black Sands and was talking about the experience last night.
Kinda wish I gave it a shot now!
As of now, sort of considering whether to give openRPI a try, or stick with something much more out the box like Ranviermud.
Hosting - considering something like mudmagic that'll do all the legwork for you for some $.
Would be interested to hear whatever advice you have to give.

That's a great idea. I will gather some thoughts on it and make a video. Why not?

Any interest in the technical side of things? I can show how you can get a mud up and running from home with an old crappy laptop if you'd like.
It's really not that hard. I have a laptop sitting right next to me running a linux that I use to do all sorts of fun server/client things with my main windows machine.

That's pretty much what I was talking about!
It'd be interesting to see how one would use an open source code to run the engine locally. Basic things you've learned along the way. Things to look for in a host server online.
Doesn't have to all be video, but I personally think it'd be a neat watch.

Will definitely do something. Pick a codebase you want me to setup and I will do a walkthrough for it. This is an interesting project thing for me because I've always wanted to do tuturial videos on techie stuff but there's SO much out there already it's hard to pick something. This is niche and small so it's right up my alley.
What codebase would most people use though is the question? I'd rather use something clean than have to debug for hours to get it up.

Circlemud is very clean right out of the box and has usable code. RPI is more of a concept than a codebase. I don't see why you couldn't use Circlemud or any of the canned Diku derivatives to host an RPI.
The last time I independently ran a mud was '98 so I'm sure some of the options have changed. At the time I traded some technical expertise with a friend who ran a datacenter and got my mud hosted that way. It would have been easier to charge him the going rate consulting fee and then just pay for a mud host service out of that.

I'd find any interesting, but one of the more considered ones would be github.com/Sebguer/OpenRPI
I think we've sort of settled on a much earlier version for a couple reasons, but this would be similar to what we had in mind.
Was also told that Ranviermud was a clean out the box Diku. github.com/shawncplus/ranviermud

If anyone is going to start a mud in 2018, they'd be crazy to not do it with Ranvier. It there's anyone on the project with even minimum coding chops, they'll find that Ranvier translates better to their skillset than anything else. Also, the guys who made it are still active-ish and you could easily reach out to them and ask questions. www.ranviermud.com/The fact that its node.js based means that the time spent working on it won't be entirely wasted in developing some kind of employable skill. It would be easy to set it up to where others could help in a data entry capacity, even without coding knowledge. If I had time, it'd be a lot of fun to fuck around with and recreate a Dark Sun style mud. I wouldn't bother with a bunch've circle-jerk homebrew stuff like cat people or such, though. I'd just take it from the books. Most of what determines if a MUD succeeds or fails, is how much of a jackhole you are about running it. You have to have some kind of grasp of narrative conflict and what motivates people. Armageddon managed to catch this pretty perfectly with early 2000s Allanak, before it got ruined. For a while though, it had a good mix of both structure and direction (like the T'Zai Byn and noble houses) and staff that didn't micromanage you as much.
