So, in reading the help file for armor, it says that armor class doesn't exist. That being said, does it make a difference if I wear say...a simple jerkin vs a suit of duskhorn chainmail? Other than the weight difference, is there any other reason to take into consideration the type of material? I'm sort of at a loss for scounging up decent armor.

Armor class is an idea from D&D. Every armor in the game still has a armor value, higher the better, for protecting a hit location.
Types of material matters a lot. The poorly made mek hide armor is still better then most other things. It's armor to weight ratio is bad, but it's total armor value is pretty good.

The heavier the better for the most part. It will give you that message "lunges at you but is defty deflected by a duskhorn chainmail" or the "Your attack on is absorbed by his super heavy horror shell helm" or whatever. The lighter armors won't have that happen as often.
Actually now that I think about it.. that FIRST message I wrote is more of a defense thing. I think it's where your defense is so high you just managed to take the blow glancing on your armor and take no damage, whereas the second message is you actually getting hit, not moving, and letting the armor just take the blow.

I've had a couple of those messages where I've managed to deflect attacks. Based on what you say, does that mean a combination of defensive skills (parry, dodge, shield blocking) will also factor into how an attack is absorbed too? Or is that all armor? I'm so used to having an identify skill or spell handy to id equipment. I know horror stuff is pretty tough stuff, but its trial an error for everything underneath that. Sorry for the newbish questions...just trying to not be gutted alive here I appreciate the help!

No. It's your natural defense modifier. Shield use, parry, (dodge? it's not a skill) are used only in those acts. So if you parry well your parry succeeded if you don't the parry modifier failed and it went to the next best hing, your agility/nat. defens to dodge it if tha tfailed that your armor either absorbed it or you used your high natural defense modifier to deflect it with your armor somehow.

Delerak is correct, and even on the ordering of the messages too.

Oh, wow that is definitely good to know! So much to learn...now to test out armor materials...ugh. Maybe I'll just wear horror stuff and pray nothing gets past as I sit encumbered like a little tank.

So headshots you reel more, higher chance to knock someone out.
Neckshots...I dont know? A combination of reeling/damage?
Backshots...pure damage?

Do remember that you can't technically hit the 'back' in normal combat at all. I've never seen anybody get hit there in normal combat. The only way you can attack the 'back' is when somebody is sleeping/paralyzed/subdued. The weapon you're using will default to their back in that case.
