Because the criminal experience, on Arm, has been reduced to what you can accomplish with SNEAK, HIDE, STEAL and PICK. The blame continues to fall on "miscreant" and "elf" and "bad rp", but the real issue is there is no room, at all, for a criminal experience. The spice trade is broken, impractical, pays entirely too poorly for the risk (both npc and LE pcs, but especially the latter). You cannot hope to raise and persist as an independent criminal of any real success, because the Guild, or staff running Guild NPCs, will wholly fuck you over for it.
You can STEAL, or PICK apartments, and pilfer those to your hearts content (until someone LOOKs at you, post fail...), but ANY other endeavor will be crushed entirely, by bored LE pcs, and the global "united against crime" alliances between Allanak, Luirs and even Red Storm, now that it, too, is heavily influenced by sponsor role pcs.
You cannot scam people, unless you're meta-scamming the player behind the pc, which is shifty AF on its own. Even half-giants will consistently sniff out your cons, and report it to authorities. Everyone, plays to win, to be the winner, who never loses, no matter how hard they have to bend and warp things to justify it. Being a criminal has become an incredibly empty, dead end job (literally), wherein, you have no real options. The BS on the GDB, about being a thief or whatever, who works for Templars/Nobles is a farce. It almost never works that way, without some ooc connection to the noble/templar you work for.
Tbh, for all the complaints about stolen mount tickets, people should think about how shallow that players role is, where pilfering a ticket or a bunch of gems, is going to be the high point in their Arm experience for the day. It's total garbage, and idiots on the GDB, continue to hammer away, about how stealth needs nerfs, so they can spot & sword every stealthy they see, without issue. They don't quite realize, I think, how much of an on/off stealth is, or how absolutely critical it is, to even have the paltry scraps that pass, for a criminal/shady experience in the game.
With stealth as is, you can at least be a pick pocket, or burglar some places. Everything else, has been stripped away, either by staff direction, or the increasingly common meta play, that both staff and players tacitly accept, but pretend doesn't exist. Without stealth as it is, there is nothing. Just socials and sword swingers.
It sucks, yes, when master scan (and high wis) fails me, and some shitlord is emoting from hide about "dancing through the crowd, laughing, catcalling, and grabbing" my pcs stuff, whilst spamming steal. Its super annoying. But, what lets him get away with being a shit, also lets legitimate players, at least have some access to a criminal experience, paltry as it is. I don't feel we should eliminate roles, because some people can't be mature enough to handle them, or gut classes/skills, for the same reasons.
In the end, I mean, every skill that is nerfed, every class that is gutted, every spell that is neutered, because some dick used it abusively TODAY, means NOBODY has access to it tomorrow, for legitimate and proper use.
If a few people abusing STEAL is so bad, that its causing a 50 player peak to have NOBODY around Allanak (and, tbh, there really isn't anyone around, as of the last few times I passed through), STAFF need to do their fucking job, and punish those people severely, but consistently. Taking tools away from players generally, is a LAZY solution. Big surprise, its the popular one, on the GDB.
