What I see?
You are stuck in one scenario.
If I was an enforcer and had the option of backstab or bash in a 1v1 situation, yes, if I thought I was hidden and they didn't know I was there, I would backstab them first in nearly all cases.
However, if we were hunting each other and I thought they might be starting their backstab? I would bash. Since it is an instant command so it would either put them into a wait state and disable their ability to backstab or it would put me on the ground, but in combat, and so still disable their backstab.
However, if it was a 3v1 situation, I would bash.
However, if I was already in combat, I would bash (since flee+backstab is twinky as hell).
However, if they missed their backstab on me, I would wait until I thought their wait state was about to come up, and then I would bash them.
You really need to consider all scenarios, not just the alpha strike.

Is fleeing and then backstabbing twinky? If it's so bad why don't they just put a cooldown on backstab like 5 minutes from when combat ends or something!

God, that restless inability to get into a new character on the heels of your favorite character you've played in almost 10 years dying stupidly.
Well, she lived stupidly too, so it was true to form for her to die in the dumbass and preventable way she did.
I could have had her blindly fumble her way to safety in the moonless dark, I had good direction sense.
But I wanted to rp it, and so she died.
Eh, still not sure it was worth the cost to my enthusiasm. :/
RIP dumbass, you were going to eventually die to doing it, but you really chose a hell of a time. :/

While I was driving home from work today I got this strange feeling that I haven't had for a very long time. It was an urge to play Arm. I just couldn't shake it. It kept returning. I was an old familiar feeling I'd had so many times before. I kept thinking about what kind of class/sub-class combination I was going to make, what the name would be, what their background would be. Again, I just couldn't shake it. I kept telling myself "Self, you've been down this road before. You closed that door a long time ago."
So I get home, I start reading some reviews on the Mud Connector and then FINALLY I came to my senses. I read about how Tuluk is closed and that there is no overarching meta plots happening or any intrigue that doesn't extend to who stole Lord Fancy Pants lace underpants, or who's sleeping with whom. It was while reading a review that I realized that I Arm has 14+ staff members and if even a portion of those staff members were online regularly, being active in the game world by driving world plots or even minor plots, how much life that would breath back into the game.
I guess I'm just aching for something that doesn't exist anymore. And now I'm sad.
What are some good Arm alternatives? Does anything measure up to the fun some might remember back in the day when Arm had plots involving Nak & Tuluk wars, Defilers/demons/Hadon, EoTW, mantis invasions/Rusa Dragonsthrall domination, Skylle/kryl invasions, time travel, Elemental planes/gates/invasions, the destruction of Tuluk/Red Storm, etc? Because I realize that's what I'm itching for, not just whatever it is Arm has become.

Have you tried playing tabletop in person or online because... I think that might be your best bet.

When you realize that your first mostly queer woman pc in a long time who loves puns is a linguist subguild and very good wisdom making her literally 'a very cunning linguist' but there is no way to make this joke icly without stretching stuff. :<

It wasn't so long ago that people - mainly staff and Lizzie-types - staunchly denied that there was a PKing problem. Then we find Shabago saying:While I certainly agree with him that removing crimecode is a bad idea, it's kind of funny to see their stances shift whenever it's convenient. One cannot help but notice that staff routinely contrives to have whatever opinion is necessary in order to disagree with players, even if they said the exact opposite last month. In one of those recent threads mentioned by Shabago, we find him saying things like: ...because on that occasion, that was the stance he needed to take in order to disagree with players. So which is it, Shabago? Is PKing on a downward trend or so widespread that design decisions need to take it into account? You've said both within the last quarter of the year. I just think it's odd that anytime players have any kind of feedback, the staff response happens to be whatever basically translates into "nothing needs to be changed." And what few suggestions are too innocuous to shut down on some pretense of concern for the game's well-being are waved off with a "we've actually been discussing that lately." I've heard this hundreds of times before. Nothing ever comes of it. "We're discussing it" is staff-speak for "I couldn't come up with a concrete reason to shut the idea down without looking like an asshole, so I'm just gonna lie instead." You are not planning a city-elf tribe. You are not debating the merits of opening more noble houses. You're just bullshitting the playerbase, and they probably know better, but have learned that it's pointless to call you out on it when a year later nothing has materialized from these supposed discussions.

40 players on but pretty much noone to reploy with. Where the heck is everybody? Are they all just training clans/mudsexing in their apartments?

Unlatch fails A LOT, even at master sleight of hand and high agi. Put your valuables in a closed container.
