When you are 14 in 1999, there are not a lot of options in the way of online games. And anyone should be able to play ArmageddonMUD... in fact, younger people SHOULD be exposed to writing games. Hell, they might even grow up to be English teachers who know where commas go in relation to quotation marks.

Listen, I never felt like a victim. I felt worse for the poor fucking lady who found out that I was a minor than I ever did for myself. Let's be fucking clear about that.

The point is to prevent people like her from falling into similiar mistakes, which is maybe easier than you realize on a game like Armageddon, and to point out that fucked up shit like that happens left and right as they're wasting time figuring out who's twinking or who's who on the shadowboard or any of that shit. That's the point.

Weird story as I walk between bars.


The closest thing to the first incarnation of the shadowboards was an IRC channel. I was 14 or 15.

Exploring IRC some, I found Christian debate chat rooms. This is at the time when I was going to church camp, too.

Make a long story short, I quickly became a militant atheist and started spreading the gospel to my high school friends, managing to actually convert a few of these rural Mississippians into atheists. It was unheard of, and I'll always be proud of it.

I won my first award for writing shortly thereafter, in a multiple-county wide competition that all students submitted entries to, causing shit like my football coach to accost me for the "fables" I wrote about.

I will always think that shit is hilarious. I hope the whole weed things turns out the same way.

I guess there are some morals to that story... with one of them being that being a miscreant in a text based game can actually influence your entire life.

If you would have told me that when I was fourteen, though, I would have wondered what kinda drugs you're on... Or maybe not, because at the time, spice was the only drug I had tried.
