Extended sub-guild have really made all classes potentially more powerful. Mages are no exception.
Now it used to be that whirans were the shit for exploration, and they still are with the ability to be invisible and probably more importantly fly. Of course drovians have send shadow. With slipknife/rogue/outdoorsman subguilds mages get sneak/hide. Rukkian sleep doesn't seem so bad with everyone having barrier but when you can sneak/hide in, contact hooded.scrub, break barrier, cast sleep. It suddenly feels a bit more potent.
In terms of exploration fly is still the shit especially alongside invisibility. Still though rukkian/outdoorsman with full gear and burrow/godspeed is probably even less detectable. However assuming we aren't talking about the farthest reaches of the known where death rooms might exist we often still have annoying hole and falls to deal with. Again i think rukkian with full sets of climb gear+god speed might not be so bad off, however water mage has invulnerability which you can cast mid fall and keep you from getting hurt or knocked out. Water mage also has food/water which means you can be out there forever, and oasis is great however not as good a burrow for keeping safe and regening movement.
We always come back to climb though. Do mages have other alternatives? Perhaps summon ridable mount that can fly? Rukkian with godspeed+climb gear effective at all?

Something you might not have to special app for and wait 20 days+ to get approved then.

Whiran mon mounts can fly; this is the only way to get a non-Whiran buddy to fly without extra reaches. They can of course levitate and featherfall friends, which make climbing easier. You can't fall levitating, so it makes climbing just a matter of trying enough times to succeed without getting injured at all. Movement is still drained.
Sorcs also don't get every spell in the game; every elementalist gets a small number of spells sorcs do not have access to, and they get virtually none of the Nilazi tree.

Are you sure whiran mounts can fly? I hear this occasionally, but I dont believe it. I'm yet to ever meet a single person who created a mon whiran mount and had it flying. Is this something you just heard, or did you witness it happening?

It's something I've done in the past. Both mon Whiran mounts and mon Templar mounts fly. Mon Sorcerers might but i don't remember.
How many Whirans are willing to waste slate to use a mount when they can just relocate/fly anywhere? Virtually none. Most Whirans nilcast mount until they branch gate and then never touch it again, because why would they?

Or they can just cast fly on any mount they want.

fly is a self casting spell. You cant cast it on others with un reach. You could cast levitate, I guess.

Barka is correct, at least as of about a year ago. I summoned a mon whiran mount and could not get the damn thing to fly. if someone knows some wonky syntax that was required to do so, please speak up. Because I tried everything, and the damn thing wouldn't leave the ground.
As far as exploring - Drovian, hands down. Send shadow is all you need. You take no risks, you pass through physical barriers, and you're basically undetectable. And even if someone DOES spot you via detect ethereal, they're not going to know who it was, unless they know what your particular shadow looks like. The only drawback is that you've got to have your character in a safe place to cast it, and you can only explore at night/indoors.
Otherwise, I found my whiran/outdoorsman highly effective. Between levitate/fly, invis and sneak/hide, I was a fucking ghost. But now they bumped whiran karma, so not sure that's much of an option anymore. Whirans are good, what with invis/fly/wind armor/create rune/relocate. But there's still some things that can whack you, if you're not careful.
As far as mundanes - ranger.
And for any of them - I would highly recommend getting a guild/subguild that gives you direction sense. Except Whirans...as wind armor handles that for you just fine.
