Like, I knew a couple people back in the day who were into scientology. These were pretty smart, mostly normal people. I couldn't figure out why they got suckered in by a strange cult.
I mean, scientology has all these bizarre, controlling rules. They label any dissent or dissenters as enemies of the organization. There's a bunch of petty secrets about stupid things that nobody is allowed to talk about outside of certain rooms in specific circumstances with specific people. Anyone who exposes or publishes the secret codes is shunned and labeled an enemy of the organization.
Abusers are protected fiercely. Anyone who speaks out about abusers in scientology is shunned (aka banned) and labeled an enemy of the organization.
...
Sound familiar?
I used to wonder why these pretty smart, mostly normal people got suckered in by a strange cult. Then I woke up 20 years later and realized I got suckered by pretty much the same bullshit.
Please Halaster, read this and do better. Take scientology as a counter-example. Anything they're doing, Arm shouldn't be doing.
But honestly? Just unplug the mess. Let's be done with it. I really do think that's the best way to let the people who have been harmed heal. That's where the effort should be going. The silly elf game is a silly elf game. There was a human cost to running it. Let's worry about trying to right by those who were hurt above all else.

There was a human cost to running it. Let's worry about trying to right by those who were hurt above all else. The biggest cult-like aspect to Armageddon IMO is the simultaneous desperation for increasing membership while castigating and disavowing former members or those considering leaving. There are probably a few dozen people watching this board that would go back to Arm in a heartbeat if it was under remotely sane leadership. But since they're just worthless derpboarders in the staff's eyes they have no reason to go back. And new people that have never heard of Arm before quickly see how members are treated the moment they even think about heading off. See Kavrick's Player Announcements post about his planned departure, how staff weren't supporting him, and half the players replying in the thread were trying to convince Kavrick his experience with staff was his own fault. I think the only difference is that with an IRL cult, if you tell a cult member that you used to be part of the cult, they will pretend you don't exist. If you tell an Armageddon player you used to be part of the cult, they will spam you with "CRACKAGEDDON" "JUST PLAY THE GAME" "YOU SHOULD PLAY YOU WERE SO FUN" because they constantly need suckers to keep the game going.
