When this spell went in it seemed like it had nuance and layers to it, and some staff implied it had hidden niche uses. I've never seen it used for anything but making your sword so you can cast spells with it.
But there's a lot to it that makes it seem like it SHOULD have niche uses. Every type of mage has a different echo when they cast it about the qualities they're imbuing into the item. Most mages' imbued items glow, but some hum. Has anyone had any success trying to figure out if this spell does anything? EVERY mage pretty much gets it, so you'd think there's a big test set.
I don't even need to know what it does exactly, just have if it confirmed it really does something or not.

There is something to it that is not widely known. I think maybe two people figured it out in total.

Okay, I don't really need precise spoilers, it's fun to know there's some real secrets to be discovered through experimentation. I'm a low-IQ mouthbreather but it's still neat.

I would actually kind of prefer if you edited this post to not contain the hint, so that people who figure it out aren't immediately outed as alt board readers and also so that it stays a little rare.

Well. By not sharing it, the only ones who know are those who coincidentally happen to be staff alts, or friends of staff. (And I know for an absolute goddamn fact that past staff have been exceptionally generous in sharing code secrets with friends). All sharing it here does is ensure that staff alts, staff friends and filthy shadowboarders know it as well.

That's fair, but I'm a big believer in there being mysteries to chase. I just want to know if the mystery has an answer or is bullshit and unsolvable.

How long have mage subguild and the imbue totem spell been around? ...2 years? And out of 50-200 plays only a few people have found out a coded response?
Does this seem like a useful part of the game? - Coded secrets?

Put it on Spoilers if not here. There are plenty of spells with alternate uses.

Anybody around who knows the answer to this and would be willing to pm it to me? Would appreciate it. I've tried all kinds of things and can't come up with anything.

Imbue Totem does nothing other than what it says on the tin. You can cast while holding an imbued item as if your hands were free.
I suppose an alternate secret use is that if you make yourself ultra-powerful wielding magick and weapons at the same time, staff are more likely to animate NPCs to kill you.

The helpfile says there's another use. Describes the weapon use for casting while holding weapons, then says some people use it on a specific type of artifact for another use. Don't remember the exact wording.

I do not know if this is the 'other use' but Imbue Totem does have another effect. If a Krathi casts imbue totem on an object, then hands it off to a non-krathi, and they try to cast while holding it, the object will 'attack' the non-krathi. Small explosion, did enough damage to take Viv from full HP to mortally wounded.
There is a save involved, because when I as a krathi tried to use an object a Viv imbued, I got an echo about a thorn growing from the object and trying to stab me but I evaded it.
I didn't explore the interaction any further, because it 1-shot someone in front of me and I wasn't trying to die.
I'm unsure if this is the 'other effect' or if there's another useful use for imbue totem, that hasn't been found. I always thought it might involve components, either making them more easily or maybe you can empower them to a higher level when imbued. I don't have the means to test currently.
