Don't get emotionally invested in a creative outlet focused on storytelling.
Think about that sentiment for a second... The whole point of storytelling is to evoke emotional investment. The whole point of a creative outlet is to express something. If you're not willing to get emotionally invested in an RP game, you might as well not play it. There's better hunting simulators out there.

I agree (at least somewhat) with the last two posts.
There ought to be a recognition on staff's end that people do emotionally invest in Armageddon, and they should be responsible actors in that regard. They shouldn't abuse people's emotional investment via the various ways in which they do that. Emotional investment in a story is okay; abusing that emotional investment is not. Emotional investment in Armageddon is ill-advised only because staff and prominent players have shown they're willing to abuse the investment.

cult - a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
Sounds like a mud to me.

cult - a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister. Sounds like a mud to me. Strange and sinister. That describes a 99% of mud players. 90% of gdb and jcarters forum participants and 100% of staff.

Fuck man I quit playing this game and stop checking this forum for a while and come back to a post calling the game a cult. What a fucking time to be alive.
Not that I disagree with OP at all. Quite the opposite. Just... fuck man. Never thought I'd see the day.

I've thought about this before myself, though, in sort of a non-religious way.
I've always found muds to be very "cult of personality". Staff members are revered a la Stalin, infallible. Certain players are cherished and can do no wrong (guilty of this myself). etc.

Cults work because they play on a certain set of human emotions.
Muds work because they play on a certain set of human emotions.
There's some overlap. You could just as easily ask why you see so many alcoholics in bars.

Arm isn't a cult, a cult is a very specific thing. It's a community. Arm is more like a toxic corporate environment where drama and gossip run rampant, everyone is on edge, the ladder climbers that degrade others to boost their own standing, and the people that see it as their obligation to uphold the petty social order. All communities have this to varying degrees. Cults probably get along better internally.

Having never been in a cult, I dont really know...but I think it's more of a get along or else type scenario.
See: bodies in the desert cages in the basement
I personally like the comparison.
Whether it's the involvement in strange fictional worlds/beliefs, the figurehead and supporting cadre, the social ladder/expulsion, the drive to please others you deem to be above you and the expectation of such from those you deem below, or the perceiving as strange and weird to the outside world, there's a lot of similarities.
Obviously muds aren't a cult...
First off, mud players are friggin' stingy, and cults typically operate for the financial benefit of a select few. Good luck scrapin' dollars from people playing 90's online games, likely from the local McDonalds wifi.
But overall, muds are very cult-like, is my thoughts.

If we're simply talking about an organizational comparison, then gringoose is absolutely right that Armageddon is more comparable to a toxic corporate environment. Armageddon staff (and players, frankly) would learn a lot from reading Robert Sutton. The "no-asshole rule" isn't just for workplaces. Staff should read it to learn how good management works; players should read it to learn what they should expect from management.

Eyeball quits Armageddon. 11 people say their good byes, wish good luck, or say how fun it was to play with them. Delerak stops joining his voice to the echo chamber of negativity within Shadowboard.
Shakes goes back to Arm. delerak: ban me from the discord? lol. so much for being against bans. how pathetic Aug 30, 2019 at 5:58pm Delerak: No it was Pooch whoever that is on these forums. apparently I was just kicked not officially banned. Aug 30, 2019 at 8:19pm delerak: but I think I'll stay gone. no point in hanging out there Aug 30, 2019 at 8:20pm shakes: There was a Discord? Oh yeah. I remember. I looked at it one time and it was just Grumble being Grumble. I abandoned it immediately. Aug 30, 2019 at 9:27pm purgpurgpurg: Stay gone, fucker. Can't believe I ever had an ounce of respect for your opinion Aug 30, 2019 at 9:50pm purgpurgpurg: jeshin: delerak was being a fallacy-flinging fucktard and I had enough of it and kicked him out. Keep trying to undermine people's grievances with the game, del. you Christ. Nobody has suffered more than you, so nobody gets to feel bad? Stop gagging me. Aug 30, 2019 at 9:54pm * purgpurgpurg: shakes Just like you "abandoned" your ragequit on here and you're back slurping at Arm? Spare me too. Aug 30, 2019 at 10:00pm
pinkerdlu: ^ preach it, purg Aug 31, 2019 at 12:54pm qwerty: That makes me laugh. Sep 1, 2019 at 3:10am Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. Definitely cult like!

Seven people gave apparently heartfelt goodbyes to Eyeball; the remaining four were neutral or flippant ("see you in a year" to someone resolved to walk away from the game forever). It is genuinely embarrassing to see someone criticize Armageddon for years simply reduce their expectations severely and crawl back to it instead of finding a better game. It is sad to see people go back to the game after resolving to stay away and lead a more productive life. I don't fault punished ppurg for his views but he's as welcome to them as delerak and shakes are welcome to play Armageddon with severely reduced expectations. He's also free to kick people from his Discord server if they're being disruptive.
