The silt here is extremely turbulent and fast-moving, although only
waist-deep. The substance rushes around in a clockwise circular pattern,
towards the apex of the whirlpool. The low cloud of silt constantly
hovering over the terrain hangs low here, filling your lungs and making
you cough.

lake is funneled down here, but all of the silt with it washes away at the
protective barrier created by the stones.

Looks like if he hadn't been so quick to offer to retcon, he might've been able to stay alive. Since the staffer seemed fairly ambivalent about it at first.
Then as soon as he gave them an easier option, he was dead meat. His own fault.
But still, I find 'death rooms' stupid and outdated. Relics of the 90s, really, when it was being coded by a 14 year old.

Shame they didn't roll with it and make some weird plot out of a fuckup. What I'm more worried about is someone being unwillingly outed here. I do hope you got permission to post this from the player in question first.

Be careful about what you wish up for.
... but seriously, I know where that is. I have no problem with the maelstrom (or any of the other dangerous Silt Sea rooms). You get warnings in the rdescs that you're basically wandering into a deadly windstorm, in an area of the world so notorious for instantly killing people that you don't have to find out IC. The docs actually warn you about it. There's more than enough information in the docs and some of the rdescs to tell you that you may well die on the spot if you're not paying attention.

Looks like a builder screwed up. I'd have put the dude on the shore somewhere and said OOC "Our bad!" and made up some vague survival story about being tossed around and getting knocked out and waking up on shore.
On a side note, I wish they'd rewrite the room description from the room at the beginning of the log and remove the part about the silt making YOU cough. It just seems wrong.

Internally, the staffer is probably grousing a bit at the extra work that might require. Then right on the heels of that guy is like, "OR YOU CAN JUST RETCON ME OUT OF EXISTENCE AND NOT HAVE TO DO ANY WORK AT ALL." *An ominous few moments of silence as a lightbulb sputters fitfully to life in the staffer's mind* Optimistic Dude wishes up, "Hey, you still th-" *MANTIS HEAD BEEP* |

As an interesting aside, this is not anywhere near the Maelstrom. And there was -a- reason to ask for the "Save Flag". He had an arguably interesting plot idea involving placing some unique and dangerous items there but didn't necessarily want them to vanish on crash. That's no fun for anyone who might later stumble upon said unique and dangerous items. In the IM with this un-named player, he expressed general frustration with the mis-interpretation of "retcon" by the staff. The intention was to "Retcon his solo RP around finding and using this room" ... not unlike what @jenki suggested. hell no dont give undeserved credit to the imm by calling it a misread. retconning the rp would mean erasing all the events that happened. the only thing that imm retconned was him surviving a deathtrap #realcostofawish #staffsidepoeticjustice |

What a fucking hack of a design. What fucking incompetence by the staff team.
This is an example of what not to do, folks. Once upon a time, many years ago, some 2-bit hack fucking storyteller made his little gay silt room and couldn't suck enough cock to understand how to put a death flag in.
Now, years later, this player comes along, finds it, and gets killed for his trouble of reporting a bug. Absolutely atrocious: forbid there be any exploration of the world or any interaction with the staff, because if you point out their base ignorance of DIKU, they're just going to kill your character.
That staff member should stick his head in the silt maelstrom IRL.

I'm going to double post because this log has legitimately made me angry. What sort of blatant disregard does that staff member have for any roleplay (in an RPU environment), or what blatant hatred of the player himself via that staff member, is evident here?
There's no other excuse, aside from absolute ignorance. There are at least three methods I can think of immediately to handle the situation better.
1. Let it roll as is, and change the jerkoff "I LEAP OUT AND KILLS YOU" desc.
2. Make it a plot hook, and give this guy something special for finding it like he did.
3. Teleport him to Red Storm and fix it.
None of these things involve killing the character; and instead of a memorable, good experience, we're treated with yet another reminder that the absolute truth of the harshness and bitterness of Armageddon comes from the incompetent hack-fuck staff team. I'm angry IRL.
