Happy New Year to all! I wanted to start this thread because I'm interested in knowing about particularly effective items hidden among ordinary stock in NPC shops. I know this gear is out there, sometimes in limited quantities. Especially good weapons, armor, tools. Whatever it may be, a list could be beneficial and interesting since this stuff is readily available in shops if in supply. Of course, in addition to the item, knowing where it is helps a lot. Thanks!

id be pretty interested in hearing some of this too
my mundane combat characters tend to be painfully short lived so ive never had the opportunity to experiment with weapons and armors, especially the more expensive items
i know at least a couple of players that swear by that jakhal hide jacket you can get from that old guy outside nenyuk in allanak for their nub gear
ive also heard that 'a heavy bone sword' and 'a wicked edged scimitar' (both can be found in red storm and allanak respectively, if memory serves) are among the best for their price range
alas i still havent had a chance to test much of this

IDk, there are about 1,000 good items. It all depends on what your playing, what your stats are, etc. Generally speaking, if the description says it looks good, it is. Typically I chose my gear based on: Weight, skill bonuses, skill bonuses, sheathes/containers. And all of that depends on what I'm playing.
Some of my favorites: (?) = Not 100% positive of sdesc. A pair of worn carru hide boots - Luirs starting gear, +15 stamina. A tattered red stormcloak(?) - Red Storm newbie shop gear, +15 stamina. Basically any greatcloak - +10 stamina. A black sandcloth headwrap (?) - Tuluk tribal market, +10 stamina. A pair of leather-reinforced sandcloth sleeves - +5 stam (Cheap in Luirs, expensive in Allanak) a pair of leater-reinforced sandcloth leggings - +5 stam (Cheap in Luirs, expesnive in Allanak) A pair of sturdy leather boots - Mekillot hide armor, +10 stamina. a hard black leather shirt - rinth gear. Cheap, but pretty decent light armor. a stiff black collar (?) - Allanak Salarr. Pretty good neck armor. a fanged inix shell collar - Luirs. Expensive, but very good. a spiky breastplate - +bash/bash resistance. a pair of wormhide gloves - +disarm resistance a pair or rugged gith skull gauntlets(?) - +offense, no vendor stocks them naturally, but fairly common around Luirs. a pair of bladed black shell sleeves(?) - heavy beetle chitin, +offense a feathered bone hatched - good damage, very fast a razor-edged obsidian tomahawk - great damage, very fast a clawed bone scimitar - high damage a (?) wooden maul - Tuluk, or an alley mul in Red Storm. Good lord does it do damage! a short wooden halfspear (?) - good rinthi assassin weapon. a wickedly sharp fang (?) - great rinthi assassin weapon. a forked bone dagger - +parry/+disarm? a bone hawkblade - pretty good damage, average speed - Luirs.
**Take these with a grain of salt. These are some of my personal preferences. Obviously I can't confirm this stuff, but this is what I hear/ get a sense for. Also, I'm not 100% on most of those descs.

Does anyone know where a baobab staff comes from?

Not entirely sure, but I'd imagine in Tuluk?

All of the staffs/staves/battle sticks are locked to Salarr and the Tan Muark. If a Tan Muark gives you a battle stick they are immediately force stored and you become persona non grata with the clan and they will likely hunt you down.
Except that shitty staff that is so incredibly bad it's not worth mentioning some twiggy whatever thingy you can get in tuluk or luirs I forget the name but it is worse than sparring weapons.

Due to clubmaking/axemaking not being skills that come with the master weaponcrafter sub, and axes in general not being all that popular, the number or craftable axes and maces is pretty low.
That said, the blue-dyed Sun Runner warclubs seem pretty popular.

I'm surprised delerak hasn't commented in this thread. Clawed bone scimitars are great. The Blackwing outpost erdlu-tooth bracers give a parry bonus. There was a chest piece I used to be particularly fond of but I can't recall the name of it. Anyways, on 95% of my characters, I ended up rocking whatever gave me the most stamina. Kuraci camos were my favorite.
EDIT: Ah, the spiky breastplate.
The Sun runner warclubs are downright OP. They were popular with certain Red Fangs as well. Very low strength requirement, great damage. Obsidian tomahawks were the chop equivalent.
There was a bone sword from Tuluk...a gray bone broadsword, I think, that couldn't break. So I used it with my HG.
I used to start in Luir's, just to get those sweet, sweet carru boots.

The Akai Sjir gortok clubs are ICly believed to be good even equalivant to the SR tasseled club but it's propaganda. Staff revealed its stats are actually shit, don't waste the money.

Most of the items have changed, I have a lot in my head that I can recall but eh it doesn't matter. Just buy shit that looks cool on yer char and go from there.

like... how do you even go about figuring that a piece of armor on your char gives +offense?

Gear won't make up for intent skill grinding. If you really want good gear, buy or steal clan-only gear. Barring that, just buy a couple pieces of weapons and armor from Salarr, and use the best one. One piece out of three or four will be much better than anything stock out of the stores.

Unless you have a staffer it is all guesswork. So you'd need a staffer to confirm your suspicions about an item. Which I'm sure is possible. It'd be so much better if it just fucking told you in the item description.
You feel this weapon would be difficult to disarm.

like... how do you even go about figuring that a piece of armor on your char gives +offense? nerds Typically, once you have a character who you're more or less maxed with, and who you fight/twink a great deal with, you can more readily perceive the changes. Sparring on one of my rangers with maxed parry, I could tell the difference in success rate between having the erdlu tooth bracers and not having them. And even warriors could tell the difference with having Salarr expansion division bracers on. When Nadhir had two of those on, his parry was practically equivalent to a warrior. There's like 10 points of difference between a maxed ranger and a maxed warrior's parry. And the difference between ranger and warrior parry is night and day. Thus, bracers which give +2 or +4 each, it's quite noticeable. The whole +offense thing isn't as obvious. For one thing, for most people, offense is going up all the time. But I did get a feel that certain items definitely helped, once I was maxed. Most knowledge about this stuff though comes from staff telling their friends and their friends telling other people. All this said, we're definitely talking about 2-5% bonuses at best. The natural course of raising offense, humanoid/animal lethality hidden stat, or just raising your skills all make a much bigger difference. With the sole exception of those ED 1.0 bracers. Those were bananas. If I had to choose between a magic ring or having two of those bracers back, I'd choose the bracers.
