From my experience, the code is absolutely great, state of the art really, but it's a demomud to test the bugs/glitches and perfect it as its just a front for futuremud code which will be released to the public upon being finished, for everyone to make their own muds - even if you aren't a coder.
It used to have a big playerbase, but things died down. Now it's just a bunch of people who all colab (for the most part), and have some sort of power-control/gang mentality where your pc isn't allowed to express itself, disagree, or carry a weapon without being jailed, mugged, or killed. You basically have to do what the clique wants, when they want, how they want, or you're fucked. Not much room for growth with that. I suggest avoiding the playerbase and enjoying the code if you want to play.

I remember most of the LabMud crew from when they were SOI'ers. Sounds like old MM gobbo cliques. (which were really fun) More or less seems like they need a second clique to feud against.

I wasn't going to respond to you but being as you seem to be desperate to trash talk the MUD on any forum you can, I figure you deserve at least a little bit of response. Also the ARM shadowboard folk will probably love watching the drama in a schadenfreude sort of way, so enjoy.
Firstly, Battlebeard had the right of it. LabMUD was never intended to be a long-lasting, big playerbase MUD to content with the best of them. It exists purely to gather data and feedback as I develop the engine towards 1.0. I am the developer of FutureMUD and generally fairly detached from the day-to-day running of LabMUD, which is mostly left to Shammat (as head admin) and Shane (as our RPA). Shammat is my wife, and Shane was a well-regarded player member of the community who stepped up to admin duties after a long-lived PC died. For the last few months we have been in caretaker mode on the MUD as I worked towards a few major content releases on the engine. The playerbase has gone from 20-30 peak to around 10, which is still fine for the purposes of LabMUD.
We had originally envisaged an entirely unregulated, lassaiz-faire system of play on LabMUD for two reasons: one, we have had bad experiences with admin cheating in the past and wanted to see how a game could go with minimal admin intervention, and two, we wanted to see whether the engine led itself towards organic, player-driven power shifts or whether it favoured established players (for figuring out the balance). We ended up having to take a more involved approach than we had anticipated because of the lack of content at launch (players needed things to do) and also because a lot of our playerbase wound up coming from MUSHes where they were used to a lot more interaction with the admins. Nonetheless our policy is still fairly hands off.
We're also not big fans of the traditional MUD approach of clamping down on the community - that's half the reason this shadow board exists, because of the desire to . We enjoy the fact that players play with their friends and talk about the game. We like to think our players are mature enough to separate IC from OOC and so we don't discourage that kind of thing. Naturally, especially when the playerbase is small, that's going to lead to cliques.
But I mean, cliques happen in real life, in real organisations, and they usually favour the status quo. By the same token, we don't discourage other people from forming their own counter-cliques if they want to and beefing with them. You'll find that factions in our MUD enjoy no admin protection or special status. I think some of the best times in LabMUD was in the early days when we had the Slavic Mafia and Jake Ironfeather's crew - totally organic, player-led movements that conflicted for a long time. Would love to see more of that.
Now that I've talked about LabMUD, let me talk some trash of my own about you. You are one of the most annoying players I have recently had the displeasure of providing free entertainment for. You are an entitled, spoiled brat that demands everything that personally disadvantages you be worked on yesterday.
Having to deal with you saps my will to work on the game, although take solace in the fact that you aren't so bad as the couple of others that have made me consider pulling the plug on the whole game once or twice. I don't pay $150 a month and spend most of my evenings in visual studio to have brats chuck hissy fits on discord when I can't look into an issue for them because I'm at work.
Behind the screen names are volunteers that put a lot of time and money into running a free game for your benefit. I don't demand deference or even gratitude but if you are an asshole, especially to my volunteers, I don't have any obligation to accomodate you.
Despite all this, you're still always welcome back at LabMUD and you're even welcome to keep making an endless stream of red-shirt PCs to try to murder players you have an OOC beef with as you have been doing for the last month or so, because the Lab is the wild west and who knows who they've shoved into those pods.
As long as you can put a little bit of a cap on the whining. Constructive feedback always welcome though.

You are one of the most annoying players I have recently had the displeasure of providing free entertainment for. You are an entitled, spoiled brat that demands everything that personally disadvantages you be worked on yesterday. Haha that makes me laugh. Considering I've had what, two genuine concerns over the span of half a year, don't hype things up to be what they are not Having to deal with you saps my will to work on the game, although take solace in the fact that you aren't so bad as the couple of others that have made me consider pulling the plug on the whole game once or twice. I'm so honored. I don't pay $150 a month and spend most of my evenings in visual studio to have brats chuck hissy fits on discord when I can't look into an issue for them because I'm at work. It'd hold weight if this was a regular thing Behind the screen names are volunteers that put a lot of time and money into running a free game for your benefit. I don't demand deference or even gratitude but if you are an asshole, especially to my volunteers, I don't have any obligation to accomodate you. So the PC's involved were staff or your volunteers as in those willing to play your shadows of isildur-clique'd gameworld? I assume this because when I brought labmuds dirty laundry over several players got defensive immediately. I giggled. Despite all this, you're still always welcome back at LabMUD and you're even welcome to keep making an endless stream of red-shirt PCs to try to murder players you have an OOC beef It'd hold weight again if the whole trying to kill players I've ooc beef with was true, but hey you gotta try and defame someone talking down on labmud, your honor and all. Out of my last 3 - one died to robots, one was assaulted and murdered and one died having a wrestling/boxing match upon being shanked repeatedly, so much murder on my part to try and kill those I've clearly stated I was going to kill in labmud right, I didn't think you were a mind reader but you apparently believe you are one heh. As long as you can put a little bit of a cap on the whining. Constructive feedback always welcome though. I sing out of joy that I'm allowed to return to the Nazi thought control clique tactics of your labmud, but I will take a pass in contributing to the madness. Besides, your staff like your wife have said in discord previously to other players if you aren't the majority then she doesn't care what they say. And that reminds me of the game this site was created for. The staff clique has been made or is being made for a while now. Things won't change if you somehow get more players. [/quote]

Oh boy, story time! Hey kiddos, if you want to see what Battlebeard had to say after he got the shit kicked out of him IG for not obeying the IG laws, here you go. ada-young.appspot.com/pastebin/1_Dbo8QVHe seems to say that "If the whole trying to kill players I've OOC beef with was true", didn't happen. Hmmmm.. "A haggard young man with a full beard says out of character, "Ganna kill youuuuu better watch your back, one of these days I'm pay you back." "A haggard young man with a full beard says out of character, "Kill my PC - I'mma be back, just in spite to stab you in the back. *in a sing song voice* Gotta love resorting to code in all things." Gee. Looks an awful lot like ring around the rosy to me, from part of the log above. Considering his last 3 PCs initiated PvP in some way within the first few hours of being around. His newbie tag hadn't even fell off yet, but here he is doing the exact same thing. Several characters in a row. We have IG laws, and nope. He wants none of that. "A haggard young man with a full beard says out of character, "F-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-k-k-k-k-k-y-o-o-o-u-u-u-u." That was my favorite part. He put a lot of effort in to just curse our PCs out, for not obeying the IG laws.

I could post the full logs, but I won't try and defame you, you're a lost cause to begin with. Considering the ooc clique to the ooc actions with your PC, to the 'ic laws' you try and fall back on, you're shooting your own foot. When your PC's act entirely within ooc actions, you're ganna get what you give. So again, fuck youuu. *In a cee-lo green voice* And go ahead, keep lying. Last three PC's initiated combat huh. Firstly it ain't true, secondly how would you know, three why would you care - it's ic right. But it all falls back to the firstly, you being a lying bastard and all, go ahead, keep doing it just like your serial killer PC! I find it hilarious you go to such great lengths to defend, deny, and lie, all from the moment Soi was involved.

I got involved because you started throwing a hissy fit in other avenues. Well, you made your own grave and you're doing a fine job of filling it.

Just a couple of things here and I’m done with this train-wreck. I’m playing devil’s advocate here.
I was under the impression that the point of Labmud was to test things out and break shit. That seems to me that’s how it was supposed to work and how it was advertised. With that in mind, why wouldn’t you expect random players to log in and try to kill and break shit? Second, why allow a group to make a rule where you can’t carry weapons in a place with dangerous robots? I get that most mudders are chuckle heads, but in this case, shouldn’t you be welcoming chuckleheads purely because of their ability to break shit and do stupid game breaking shit?
Honestly the reason I stayed away from the game was because I was expecting it to be full of chuckleheads.
Finally, why....why on God’s green earth would you have a rule pointed out to you (stupid as it is) repeatedly break said rule. Get your ass kicked repeatedly, continue to break said rule and then throw an ooc bitch-fit? You can’t even hide behind the bullshit, “I was being true to my character!” line. You would’ve had a much better case if you a) stopped at them pointing out stupid rule and logged out. b) went along with it and tried to see where they were going with it. Why act like a lunatic?
One of the biggest problems with this community is people going full retard over Petty shit.

You would’ve had a much better case if you a) stopped at them pointing out stupid rule and logged out. b) went along with it and tried to see where they were going with it. Why act like a lunatic? Didn't break a rule. The 'self-voted' president in game, I say that because all of his ooc buddies voted him in, made a rule that no one new is allowed to be given weapons. In the current system, only he gets paid, and only his closest friends gets the stuff iike guns they've either scavenged or murdered others for. There's no pay for anyone, so you have to ask these three for money to eat, dress, weapons, even a condom if your pc wanted to bang someone and not end up preggo or getting someone pregnant. And when you've proved you're a sheep, they might give you a weapon. So the rule was no one is allowed to be given weapons. Here's the thing - you can walk out into the dreadzone and pick up a weapon. And there's some laying about. So when my PC found a weapon, he was jumped by two people who KNEW who was playing the PC, who changed the 'rule' (which isn't even written down anywhere) that new people aren't allowed to pick up a weapon for being too much of a threat, and then they drew weapons, then mugged, KO'd and murdered because he had a bent metal pipe (one of them with a gun, both with full body armor, shields and nice steel weapons) and was so much of a threat from asking to be left alone. It's a nazi thought-control saga going on in game, and you can't even test out bugs, just sit there and observe or be killed. And the PC didn't attack anyone. One of the biggest problems with this community is people going full retard over Petty shit. Combine the fact they target people they don't like ooc'lly with IG bullshit like demanding a PC needs to be watched because he accepted the hand of a PC who offered to help him stand and thus was 'creepy', it's OOC bleeding into IC way too damn often. So, with the final OOC target, I took my leave famously with alot of fuck yous and did seriously put in thought to making a PC designed to kill them, but decided against it. Not worth my time.

We made an IG rule when one of his brand new day old PC took a weapon, and attacked someone. The rule is new people who don't show they're insane, are allowed to have a weapon (provided), after a small wait period. We actually put this rule in IG, because of his PCs actions. Or one of them. I lost count. It was lol.

Wasn't my PC tho, so keep lying brah, I'd know if my PC did it, and considering I was still making a PC when that 'rule' came in place that's a lie, as I was still recovering from my long lived PC's murder.
