There was a big overhaul in the whole system just today. Whenever I tried riding with a shield or with two swords (as an advanced riding ranger), it said "You aren't skill enough at riding while dual wielding/holding a shield". That was the exact message I got, with skill being spelled incorrectly as I quoted. Cause of skill cap changes through all the regular guilds too, I believe this is gunna be bad, especially if this sorta thing has popped up for others like myself.

This is going to be the worst bellyaching ever. Change. Armageddon's own kryptonite; its least encountered force. logs skimmed from the alt-shadowspeak discord.

Basically, the current classes are being replaced by 15 new ones with different skill trees and slightly higher starting skills.

They would have been much better off essentially combining Burglar and Pickpocket, and maybe coming up with a new class, rather than the convoluted circle jerk they came up with.

What did they actually come up with? I still can't find any details and it's been like six months.

They're breaking down the current guilds into 14-16 new guilds.
The new guilds are supposed to have less overall skills and be much less capable of being jacks-of-all, will start with higher skills levels (0%-10% ish, depending on the skill), with the goal of forcing people to be more dependent on each other and needing multiple PCs to do what you can do alone with most of the current guilds. I don't think that is the right move to make, considering how much dead air time the game has and how many people count on being able to roll out the gates and go kill something to keep themselves amused.
Each of these new guilds will fall into one of the slots on this grid system they've worked out. There's a thread with the grid it on the GDB, but I'm not going to bother linking to it.
From the snips of chat I've seen, the system has seen some sharp turns from when Nergal became disgusted with you (Yes, YOU) and someone else picking it up.
It's sort of a mixed bag, since some people involved think it's the right direction and others don't think the vision/execution of the new guilds is going to work without updating a lot of the core systems that haven't seen a serious overhaul... ever, actually. If you didn't like people being able to solo like they do now, this change is for you. Neutering your player options is one way to make the world more dangerous, I suppose.
There was also some talk about staff planning to enforce roles and get stricter on stat choice reflecting characters, though I'm not too sure what that means. It sounded like if you pick a city based guild, you're supposed to be city based. No more delicate lily's with AI str? They certainly didn't like that people were making rangers with city stealth subguilds and out performing all the rogues, or assassins grabbing outdoorsman to get archery and freely grinding backstab. Ranger will be dead and buried, no advanced weapon skills if you aren't a gladiator (special PC, not the extended sub), no warrior like we have now.
The closest thing to a warrior under the new system looks like the current warrior, but stripped down of everything that let them be useful as solo hunters. Everything else is just various degrees of poor mans ranger, without the ranger umph.
The closest thing to an assassin sounded overpowered as heck and the theory is you could mix it with a certain extended sub to have the best parts of warrior, ranger and assassin with none of the weaknesses of any.
None of the new guilds are going to cost karma, last I checked, but there is some staff who want to keep some parts of the grid special app only, which basically means staff friends and fam only.
Some talk about making changes to how players get karma, possibly getting away from requests/reviews and making it solely a staff decision, as well as adding some kind of contribution angle on karma for people who actively promote the game, advertise on relevant sites.
There's a lot going on, while at the same time nothing definitive is actually happening. I guess that sums the game up pretty well.
Lots going on, but nothing is happening.

I liked your whole post, but this was the most important part of it. This is basically an attempt to wipe out indies or, at the very least, force them to be heavily dependent upon clan members. It's a sad attempt to force people who enjoy doing things to interact with people who want an OOC social club with the veneer of a role playing game. (Again, not knocking RPers who do social roles, knocking players who treat gaming as a social activity for players first and a role playing game second.) tl;dr- Off-peak players disgust Noted Liar Nergal so they won't be able to function anymore. Nothing said officially as far as I know, just what I picked up from one of the current in-crowd I talk with. The way it was phrased in the snip, along with the explanation from the player (non-staff, w/staff favor/benefits), it was raised as a suggestion in response to the string of bad reviews and people repelling down from the trees to invade some of their recruitment efforts on other forums/communities. Basically, the idea is there would be an additional karma criteria for people who actively promote the game and support it's well-being. If it sounds a lot like "people who suck up and do recruitment dirty work", a winner is you. That is exactly how it sounded to me, too. I don't really know how far or how serious it was discussed, but since I have coffee with them whenever I'm in their neck of the country, I don't really have a reason to suspect bullshit. It isn't beyond the scope of belief, though, when you consider how open Nergal was on the forums about encouraging players to squeal on each other as a good way to earn staff trust. There's always been kickbacks for players who do staff favors, this would just be a way to take the pressure off keeping it on the down low all the time. I'd be a lot more surprised if this was the first time it's come up, or if there wasn't already some unofficial points system for people who actively support and defend the staff when opinion is low. Back in the day, a picture of your tits (or junk) got you lots of staff favor. Now, you throw your integrity out the window for it. I wouldn't give the cretins either.
