Hey there, Tried to apply for a character, denied because I needed to be in a coded clan - tried to special app a desert elf magicker - denied because it's against the docs (and denied in a condescending manner, as well). Don't have the time or inclination to roleplay in a tribal group setting. I do however like the cultural roleplay, and meeting people on the fly in the wastes. So I wanted to play a desert-elf wanderer, but I guess the idea of one of those is too far-fetched and doesn't fit into this game. Play they way they want you to or go elsewhere, unfortunately. Really, it's quite strange, I get that they aren't making money doing this, so they don't have to cater to a customer, but it seems a little weird to behave in this manner. Anyways, I played for seven-ish years, but it's probably been eight since I played last. Got a little nostalgic - I guess it's better left in the past. Not for me anymore, but I do hope you're still running the sands! Stay safe out there! and after peeps tried to justify to him what theyve normalized over the years: Eh, it's just the attitude. I've been trusted to play much more sensitive stuff than this in the past, and I've played a heck of a lot of wandering desert elves. Hell, I'm 33 years old, and I have to roleplay in the manner that works for them? I definitely have better things to do. Honestly I got a lot of enjoyment out of arm back in the day, and the Imms back then (that I dealt with anyways) seemed nice and like they enjoyed the game for what we all made it. I know this is silly, I haven't played in a long time so I can't say what it's like now, but just ... I don't think I want to play in their fishbowl with their setup pieces for them to move this way and that. I get that there are rules and they have to consider the game as a whole, but like - "No tribeless desert elves, the game can't handle that." Haha, okay then. I'll move along. smart move after a few generations of staffers came thru, the entire world u and a number of us played in evolved into a micromanaged bureaucratic fuckfest. a good part of this is because ur dealing now with a completely different staff of younger gen former players who never played when staff actually trusted high karma chars to be responsible and didnt have nuclear reactions over character ideas and plots that werent kissing up to their own agenda or world goals

All I will say is that I found his comparison to the way the game is run to that of a standard board game as pretty spot on in my opinion.
"I don't think I want to play in their fishbowl with their setup pieces for them to move this way and that."
I have come to this same conclusion myself in a lot of ways and it's one of the reasons I simply have no interest at this time, or probably in the near future, of taking back on a leadership/meaningfully social role.
I VERY MUCH got the feeling the last time around that I was basically just a pawn piece being moved this way and that depending on what whim staff decided they wanted me to fill that day/for the game.
I could give multiple examples, but, I already have. At one point I basically got turned into a staff-ran recruitment NPC for Salarr, Kadius, and Tuluk against my will as a T'zai Byn Sergeant. (To the point I quit over it in the game.)
Anyways, yeah, that's a very good way to put it and I never thought of it in those terms before. In a lot of ways the game feels a lot less like it is driven by the players and MUCH MORE like it is just a chess board where staff moves the players around like their own game pieces.
This reason alone is why I decided to stick to basically loner desert-based roles where I require no/do not have to be a part of any staff interactions/communications.

I think both are a pretty spot on description of what happened to the game. It's sad to see someone come back to the game and realize there really isn't a place for them in it anymore. Like I said a while back, I don't think its going to go anywhere or suddenly shut down, because it has a core of players that will just keep playing no matter what. But at the same time, some of us have grown up with the game and it does seem less collaborative and communicative, even when staff makes attempts to do so. The only thing I can liken it to is a really weird cult that just keeps doing just enough to keep the followers going "wow!" but also doing things to make outsiders just shake their heads. Not disclosing what the staff goals are and what their vision of the game currently is, is always going to have players that come back and say "This isn't Arm--I'm out!"
I'm glad he was able to walk away after that brief exchange and quickly realize, not playing ball would just be spinning his wheels. You could play a real long time without realizing what's going on as far as the player-staff divide. I commend Ath for attempting some player-staff exchanges, but ultimately...meh.

Sometimes I feel like I'm Tim Barton (Hawkeye) and staff are Tony Stark (Ironman).
