RogueRougeRanger and desertman: I've whinged about this so many times it's gotten silly, but I'll repeat a summary version because it's been a while. Players gather around good leaders, not benefits. A good leader in a game like this is someone who has an agenda and gives people shit to do to get to that agenda. People get themselves into the game when they feel like they have been caught up in something they influence the result of with their efforts. Arm has become a massive activity black hole because the staff keeps shutting down the people (you guys) who inspire other people to throw themselves into doing things as if they mattered.

Nergal just hates you for your amazing Lord Fatpants.
You joke (I think?) and I can't know Nergal's true feelings, of course, but I do get the impression that he does equate me with my PC Dragean, who of course was the rival of Nergal's PC Raleris. And one way to interpret Nergal both banning me from the game before and then again recently from the GDB is an effort to finally "win" over his rival. Even the weird mention of my wife can be explained by that frame, if you remember that she played Dragean's IC wife Aristarche, who was honeypotting Raleris.
Regardless of his true motivations, what I do think can be concluded by my recent banning from the GDB is that the staff didn't ban Desertman or me because of our political views. After all, Desertman's posts in the political thread were interpreted as "pro-Trump" (even though he said he won't be voting for Trump IIRC!) while my posts were very anti-Trump. Also, I don't believe any posts from Desertman or from me were even moderated when we were banned. Also, plenty of people were being combative in the thread before and after we were both banned from the GDB. So I think Desertman and I were banned for other reasons, probably for the way we play (or played) the game and for our willingness to critique the way the game is run. However, our gameplay isn't bad and our criticisms aren't without merit, so ruffling feathers in a political thread was a convenient excuse to attempt to exert control over us. If the staff truly feels that the opinions and passions posted in the political threads on the GDB are somehow bad for the game, then they should just ban politics from the GDB! Similarly, if they don't like the way Desertman or I play the game then they should just ban us from the game. It's their game, they're allowed to do with it whatever they want (regardless of the consequences)!
No, I was serious I just didn't know if it was out who you were. Nergal is totally Cutthroat though and he hated the very silk threads that Dragean wore on his rotund behind. If he's seriously still pining over Aristarche and her silver-bell anklet I don't think anything will unravel in the realm of 'makes sense'. I'd just take the GDB banning, snicker, and play the game. He'll get pissed off that it doesn't start a fight or cause someone to bitch. He's no doubt reading these forums and getting some creepy, smug look on his greasy face thinking he registered on your 'care-o-meter'.

Thanks for being circumspect, but I've been open about who I played: Hi. On the shadow board I’m a short time reader, first time poster. My main handle on the GDB, going back to the old GDB, was Red Ranger. I’m not 100% sure, but I probably used the handle RedRanger on ISCA, too. You’re most likely to know three of my PCs: Sargax Kurac, who became the Head of Kurac while I was playing him (actually the title was ‘Magnate’); Dragean Tenneshi, who was cheekily titled ‘Chosen Lord Erector;’ or my final PC the Lady Templar Htaniya Fale. Raleris sure hated Dragean and it was lots of fun to play out for a long time! But I would have thought that Cutthroat/Nergal would know that Dragean wasn't ME, he was a PC that I was playing, and that Dragean's attitudes weren't necessarily reflective of mine, as a player. Additionally, Dragean's ridicule of Raleris was never intended to be ridicule of Raleris's player. It's a game!

I agree 100%. Though I plan to put together a new PC to check things out myself soon. I won't be playing a leader though *shudder*, Desertman is a better man than I!

Consider the amount of time that he spent online playing Raleris. That doesn't exactly hint at having a healthy life outside of the game. The game is his life? He probably cannot separate the two because he <lives> the game. Why else would he bring up your wife? He took it all on a personal level seems like. Sorry you got banned.

The game is his life? He probably cannot separate the two because he <lives> the game. See, this is where the difference between a good role player and a bad one comes up. A guy like me or RRR, we would love to have a competent rival. It keeps things interesting. It puts real stakes on your actions that aren't totally out of your control (the opposite of when you have staff screwing with you). Now personally, in a game like Arm where death is certain, what I want most is for my character's inevitable death to be enjoyable. I would love to get killed over some stupid thing I did that finally came back to bite me (without staff involvement in that happening). It's much more satisfying than getting killed by a code error or stumbling into a reel-lock NPC or just being WTFPWNed by some staffer trying to add tension to an RPT. It comes down to having a seperation between yourself and your character, and it has little to do with how involved you are with your character. If I were unemployed my play time (before I quit) probably would have been comparable to Raleris', but my attachment to my character would not be a result of using them as a way to be a more successful extension of myself.

I still haven't made a new PC, sadly. I keep intending to... but I haven't followed through while I still feel inspiration. I need a spark of inspiration because mere curiosity about the state of Allanak or the game at large clearly hasn't been enough to get me over the hump.

Has Nak been slow lately, or do you just don't care for the setting?

Has Nak been slow lately, or do you just don't care for the setting? Both. I just run into the same recycled characters over and over again because you have little choice of where to play now. I can seriously spot who died and has a new toon within 5 minutes of entering the Gaj. It sucks. Options other than Nak are Storm... wee, we're all magickers up in here.... or Luir's... which is getting to be like an actual mini city so I don't know why they closed Tuluk... or the wilds... and they fu magickers so what's the point....

What are the numbers like nowadays? I have no intention of playing but I'm mildly curious if it's as dire as some people are saying. Also, how have the magick subgilds turned out?

Peak numbers are typically in the mid 40's on a busy night. This has been standard for many months now. Sadly on some weeknights you login and find 25 people on at peak times.
That isn't bad all things considered. I remember when peak numbers were 25 and I was happy about it. But, I also remember a couple of years ago when for months on end peak numbers were 60 - 70 on a standard weeknight, and busy nights saw 80 players regularly.
Things have absolutely slowed down in the last couple of years, but, I wouldn't say they are dead.
I'm not playing a ton right now, but that's just for lack of personal motivation. If I were motivated to play the tools are there and there are enough players available that I could have a good time and make things happen.
