So, I got to thinking, what alignments are shadowboarders drawn to play? Myself I shift from neutral-good to pure neutral. There's three answers alotted to all to satiate my desire for chaos however.

Well predictably neutral is up there, I could only squeeze in five slots, in the four point alignment system, neutral could be lawful nuetral, or say neutral evil, true neutral likely doesn't pop up quite frequently, I would assume. Unsure how to look at the results as of this time.
EDIT: Also I put the third choice in to allow some room for alignment drift during character development.

Vast majority of the time lawful, with the occasional chaotic. I don't really like playing good or evil characters because that's often very subjective. What even defines evil in this game? Is it killing? Stealing? Is dealing spice evil? The only thing I can think of for good is lots of charity.

Good point, especially in a world like Zalanthas, to have a truly good character, and have them be believable, many nasty things would have to be done. I think it safe to say that an alignment like lawful good would be almost impossible to maintain. Lawful neutral likewise, with all the corruption that abounds they would likely find their sole devotion to law and order to be continually at risk. Lawful evil, however, would likely be the majority of "lawful" denizens of cities.
On the chaotic side, these would mostly thrive in the less authoritatian evirons of the rinth or Red Storm, visiting Allanak on occassion, and staying on their toes in places like Luir's and Morin's, and moreso in Tuluk (if it were open), I imagine. Considering chaos is at least somewhat adaptable, and hopefully isn't a rigid constrainment for the character, I imagine they would mostly be indies, although some may work their way into clan life, which is welcome as it keeps things fresh and gritty.
But back to good and evil, both lawful good and chaotic good would face some serious obstacles, forcing them either to adapt or die, neutral good would be the exception who could get away with altering behavior for the sake of self-preservation... and as neutral good, YOU would be the bad guy (find out IC, I know I have), because you are the outlier, and most of the denizens of the known are at least a smidge evil.
As far as evil, most law enforcement will likely be lawful evil, neutral evil, to chaotic neutral. Considering the law is corrupt and priveleged, there's plenty of leeway there to make room for the occassional devience, even possibly allowing for chaotic evil, if rarely. A Templar gets more leeway with their actions and motives, so could go so far as to tipping toward lawful neutral, or even toward the good side of the scale, but considering the setting, lore, and background, it would be highly uncommon.
Nobles can straight up be whatever they want to be, so long as they mind the image of their house, and even then, they're given large amounts of leeway. Merchant House family members, while lower on the social scale, can also get more leeway with their alignment and hiring practices.
As far as the Byn? Got three small? Suit up, grab a sword, we're hunting spiders. Few will give a fuck what your alignment is based on hiring, surviving, however, depends on who's in charge and who comprises the majority. They're usually outcasts and undesirables, so expect a wide range of people who would otherwise not survive.
Just my thoughts on alignment dispersal through the castes of Zalanthas.

Oh, and if you try to out-evil an Allanaki commoner, you'll come off as a cartoon villain, it's safe to say.

I think that lawful neutral can be done, but it's hard because there isn't a 'letter of the law' to compare your actions to. Rather it would be done by adhiring to a set of rules outside those of the corrupt cities. A code of honor, very strict following of clan guidelines, etc.

True neutral is difficult to play, which is the only reason I'd have the suspicion that it would be uncommon. I could be wrong, however.

True neutral is difficult to play, which is the only reason I'd have the suspicion that it would be uncommon. I could be wrong, however. the way they described it seems total opposite to that because its basicly someone indifferent to it all who wants to do their own thing, and the majority of indies i ran into fit this to a tee esp when they lived outside the citiesand it says type one neutral evils are basicly true neutrals who ignore or lack empathy when making most of their decisions ive seen way more of these neutral/whatevers than the lawful or chaotics at least when theyre not in clans going in those directions like legions or rogue mage groups etc

My understanding of true neutral must come from an older set of rules. I always hear true neutral was more focused on maintaining balance between all the forces, seemingly switching sides for little reason should another side become too powerful... what they're describing sounds closer to my understanding of chaotic neutral. It may have been revised since I read the official alignment rules.

i think its just the diff between treating alignments like things ppl strive for for its own sake vs tools to describe the way chars live or make decisions
i think the 1st one is prob the trad model vs the 2nd which is a smoother fit for worlds where chars dont fit into categories based on what ideal they fight for like u see in most high fantasy

The section on alignment on this web page looks like it is from the dark sun AD&D manual: Dark Sun Alignment. So you can play Lawful Good just don't think of it as a paladin version of lawful good. Damn, for some reason now I want to play a fairy paladin (no not gay, fairy!) - "a blessing for you..and you..and you..weee!"
