Jesantu, I maintain that players have become that way because of Arm staff's culture of limitation. One could blame the players in the sense that it's they who play the game, and if the game is boring, it's because the players are boring; but if the players have become boring because of years of staff systematically stamping out initiative and creativity, isn't it a little pointless to blame the players? They're not the reason the game has come to be boring, even if they are the ones who are now boring -- same as some guy shooting another guy in Chicago is part of what makes Chicago a violent city, but it's not the reason Chicago has become a violent city.
But for every petty and small minded imm out there there are a dozen petty and small minded players, many of whom have actually promoted the culture of limitation and encouraged the imms with their demands for more limitation. A good case in point would be the tan muark style of speech. You remember, the frequent use of "neh" and phrases like "She have nae got an erdlu". This was never really in the TM docs but it was started a long time ago by multiple players and eventually became the norm which was passed down from player to player. Until one fine day some petty, useless player with nothing better to do wrote in to the staff complaining about the way gypsies spoke. In response nyr contacted all the gypsy players at the time and instructed them to not speak this way any more. Suddenly they had to stop speaking the way they always had. Talk about jarring.
Another example would be when a now ex player apped a character with the keywords "black-curled". Nyr contacted the player after she had already been accepted and informed her that a player complained about the use of the word "black-curled". Apparently it wasn't clear that it meant their hair was black and curly. Like what else could it mean? The person was one big giant black curl? You have got to be kidding me. To think that some player actually burnt calories writing in a complaint about this. Added to the fact there are npcs out there with black-curled and agafari-curled and about every other curled you can imagine. But nyr instructed the player to change their already existent sdesc thanks to some useless player.
I'm not saying nyr's a great guy. Or any of the imms who allow such horrible limiting of players creativity and expression. But don't think for one instant that there isn't a very large population of pathetic players who have nothing better to do than nitpick and naysay. Just look at the average gdb post if you think I'm mistaken. I do recognize that there are some truly awesome players out there, even now. They're mostly hidden in the nooks and crannies but I admit they are out there. And I think all it would take is for a three or four inspired players to show up and turn the game around. But I will always point the finger at players as well as staff combined. The enabler is just as guilty as the heroin addict.
