So, surprisingly little information is actually available on these, at least not in the form of lists to spells. For the sake of myself and any noobs reading, anyone willing to explain the basics of Components? How are they used from a mechanical sense? Are they consumed on use? How does one RP coming to know which component matches up with which spell? Does one need the component crafting skill to acquire them, or can they be found raw in the wild? Assuming a complete noob who has only played mundanes, how would you explain these as a concept?

Every magick using guild will have a spell called Identify. It's a sight spell which upon casting, grants you to ability to see elements. So if you take an item that you suspect is a component and assess it while having identify on you, it will tell you which sphere it belongs to. If you're an elementalist and you assess a person of the same element, you will know he, or she is of your element.
Every magick using guild also has component crafting skill which they branch the same way you branch spells. As you practice and improve, you will come across different materials that will let you craft new weird trinkets. Or you'd come across the actual weird trinkets. So you'd cast identify on yourself and assess it to figure it's sphere.
What power level each component belongs to has to be figured out by experimentation. Though keep in mind, if you have a mon component and cast a spell that requires it on wek. You will 'still' consume that component. So if you're experimenting, best start from mon, and then go down level by level.
Components consumed depend on their number in your inventory list. So if you have a wek comp, and a mon comp in your inventory and the mon comp happens to be first, it'll be consumed, even if you're casting a wek spell. Be careful about that.
Some spells require multiple components.

Some spells require multiple components. When did that go in? I'm thinking he's talking about making the Mon components.. Sapphires, blade and skull and topaz

armqwertytwo had the gist of it, though if you ask me I'd start at wek and work my way UP to figure out what power level a component is at. If you've got say a sul component in your inventory and you try to cast the spell at wek, it won't consume the component. So you'll go through a lot fewer components if you start at wek and work your way up. Wek components are easy to craft via the component crafting skill. Mon components are really damn hard, even when component crafting is at master. You'll know a spell requires a component when you try to cast the spell. Gives you a message of lacking the proper component. Then you can take the sphere that spell requires and try to start tracking down which component you may need. Here's a list I had started to compile - information mostly obtained while having 'identify' spell on and assess (assess -v? I don't remember) items. Once you have identify and component crafting, you should also be able to 'analyze' components to see what they may have come from. Enjoy.

Unless they've changed magick code since 2013 on spells, that's wrong about the power levels. If you have a component that is at pav, it will still get used if you cast the spell at wek, every single time I've forgotten about it, it's happened. It's wasteful and stupid, but that's how it worked last time I played a mage. The component will work for every power level up to the one it's attuned to, and nothing above that, but anything below (or at that level), and it will still consume it.

I reindexed database shares at one point. Enjoy.
Components are:
Bought at shops or Foraged or foraged and then powered up with Component crafting
or crafted and then powered up with Component crafting - Some of these come from skills like wagon making and ropemaking... that may have been removed from the game
or Foraged on an elemental plane rarely, derived from other methods like severing heads. No idea if this is a skin command or a behead command or something else.
