Is there any game in the world meeting all of these criteria: - roleplay mandatory
- unrestricted PK
- perma-death
- avg. online players: 500+
- medieval sort of setup (basically, no advanced technology)
is there, or was there any project aside from muds that aimed creating a world towards this setting?

its a weird feeling, but i sense there is a gap in the market to fill this space. perhaps muds are not the solution, and graphics ruin everything, but in the next decade, a new game concept will hopefully emerge with true roleplaying concept in its center. and it will reach to masses. think of a roleplay mandatory game, not a mud, but something that is super user-friendly, perhaps a mix of visual & text, easy to adopt somehow strangely appealing.
500+ players.. actually even that is too low... the reason i feel this is because i believe in such a product and i v seen it with arm. it's addictive, its superb. and the perception that roleplaying games are only interested by minorities is entirely false. It's just that marketing and presentation of the product is shitty. Think of it as a superb delicious piece of cake in shape of shit. That's what armageddon is, that's what MUDS are. It won't fly for sure if you expect people to dedicate their hours/days to learn & adept something entirely text based and unappealing. It must be the game's responsibility. Especially in today's world, everything is consumed so fast, and shitty products are destined to fail.

Isnt' that like, Second Life? It has a LOT of users and exists pretty much just to RP or hang out virtually.

I wish Second Life was permadeath PvP. It would be hilarious.

Are there any other suggestions for other unmentioned or unknown RPIs?

Salem Online is RP, open PvP and permadeath non Mud with pretty decent crafting etc. Played for a while was pretty good. Not sure what current player populations are like/ if any.
It's f2p and you can create your own towns etc. I may actually give this a go again tonight when I get home.
