At what level of ride do you finally get able to fight mounted? Early jm? Most or all skills are combined with a stat to determine success. I think ride is a wisdom skill, but I may be wrong. Because of this, and modifiers based on the type of mount, its hard to offer you a solid answer. Try with one weapon first. Only some combinations of non rangers can fight with something in both hands without amazing stats. Also, get some riding gloves, or if you can join Kurac, get some of their special +ride gear.

Upper Jman/advance keeps you from falling off every fight.
High advance seems impossible to fail short of a charge fail.

Actually upon reading a few other threads... I can safely say that I will be able to ride that way so yeah. But the question of what skill level does it happen?
Edited thanks for answering.

It happens at journeyman. Between branching Trample and Charge. If you branch trample, but not charge, odds are you can get no-hands riding and not falling off with just riding gloves. But you have to have the skill at the cap first, which is usually a few fails after you branch Trample. This works with most subguilds that get Ride. And Breeds.
It's pretty huge being able to reliably flee, stay mounted, and have both weapons/etwo/shield out when outside the gates. I pity the warrior who doesn't take a riding subguild or half-elf race. But they might be able to get it too with a full set of riding gear.
Finding ways to tell this to people ICly is always a pain in the ass.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe half-elves can master the ride skill and also tame mounts.

I believe they get to advanced. Not sure if they master it. Never played breeds enough to know.

Merchants can master ride which works out well for the "cavalry" minded merchant, due to the combat bonus given above journeyman. Merchants can't tame mounts.

Didnt know breeds got to tame mounts. Sweet. Although their natural affinity for their mount does make sense I guess.

Sorry to revive an old thread, can't seem to find anything else about it. Not even sure if anyone still reads these forums.
Anyways, to the point, I'm back after a long break and a TON has changed, to include ride. Do humans warriors, without a ride subguild, branch trample? Is that the break point I need to look for to equip a bunch of riding gear and no-hand ride? I'm at JM now, and still fall off, get slowed riding through storms ect, so maybe my somewhat low wis is just making it take forever.
Thanks

It's hard for me to say where warriors cap, given I've played so few. More ride is usually better, although mounts possess their own vulnerabilities PVP, PVE, and RPT-wise. All I really know is, I've been playing an elven warrior and whipping a human or breed's butt in sparring, then they mount up and I can't get a hit to save my life suddenly, so at the upper-ranges it MUST provide some combat bonus.
I don't know that merchants branch charge, even though they can master ride. Breeds do, however, of any class, although, the breed-merchants I've played might have branched it by the sole virtue of being in a class with master-potential for ride. I know the two or three breed warriors I played, didn't seem to branch charge.
To skill-up ride, I had to learn a trick from the Legions. There were gardens in Tuluk with varying terrain-types. You'd wield and hold whatever, type "run", and run your mount ragged (prefferably NOT over the more cultivated portions of the garden) for those fails. This also works in the old Muarki lands rather well, provided you understand you could fall off due to a dsense fail, could get blindsided by a carru, or just blasted by a nearby volcanic eruption (only with staff assistance, I'd assume). I've branched charge that way and gotten to advanced before getting bored and deciding tavern-sitting was a better use of my time. High-range ride fails are hard to arrange, without terrain and/or weather issues.
When your mount slows to eat a nearby plant, that's a fail, when you fall off, that's a crit-fail, to my understanding. It's a delicate balance trying to find that sweet spot without dying. The more hands you have occupied, the tougher your ride-checks. If you can't no-hands ride, try some riding gloves.
EDIT: Allso, to my possibly flawed understanding, ride is more an agility-based skill. Wisdom could factor in as well.
EDIT2: This could also help explain why elves are NEVER allowed to ride. Dat agility.

Elves can ride in Dark Sun, so long as, they aren't seen riding, however.
