is anyone actually in the fucking trenches? what's life like? gdb'ers are bitching about afk newbies, which is to be expected, mudstat reports tops 50 people on in the last few weeks of watching it, with the window of 'peak' being like 1 to 2 hrs. things look shitty.
is allanak all dead? - likely peepz are sucked up north with the delf/tribal shit going down
and with no obvious reason to exist is the AoD dead too?
who is staffing the southern team these days?

Tried briefly. I couldn't help myself after Nyr left.
It's still dead and completely mired in this eerie sense of apathy. I'm not sure why they chose to run a Tablelands HRPT at a time when the thing they needed to do was fix the state of Allanak. Running a Tablelands HRPT is something you can do when there's too many people in Allanak and the place is over-saturated with activity and clan bloat. Not when the opposite is the case.
Not taking Thanksgiving into account out of fairness (it barely broke 30 that night), the numbers are pretty dismal. It sits at around 10-20 for most of the day and then a few hours in the 30s, and it pokes its head over 40 for maybe two or three hours. I didn't see 50 in the four or five days I played. People seem to just log in and exist, doing nothing of note. Felt like visiting a dying relative.

a recwnt deathbug rpt killed off a lot of long liveds, the ranking pcs in nak are low playtimes right now, but there are lots trying to gain rank in atrium so they can play with nobles who are mostly inactive. fewer gemmed than ever.
overall I think its a down period for holidays, work, etc. my other social websites that have nothing to do with arma are also slowing way down in activity and new content. people will come back on their own. however I suspect people are disappointed that the tablelands are getting focused on instead of nak or tuluk. the imm spotlight goes where it pleases and ignores the efforts of pcs. players want rightfully to be the stars of their stories and imms have for years said no to that. glass ceilings and lack of staff empowerment mean our sandbox has fewer toys and less purpose.

There's never any shortage of excuses for why the numbers are down, but while the holidays might have accounted for a couple of quiet days on Thursday/Friday, that's about as far as that can be stretched. Traditionally, the days before and after holidays are busier as people want to get some RP time in before they go out of town, and catch up after having spent time away from the game. However, as of yesterday, there were 38 players on at 10PM on a Saturday night, a day where the numbers should be as high as they get. I checked Haven (I don't really play but I know the numbers) and they were at full capacity at that time of the evening. Armageddon has just lost a ton of players, they aren't temporarily busy with work or whatever else gets the blame for low numbers each and every single time.

People who obsess over a game they never play. I'm positive that's not all that's wrong with Armageddon, but I would check that box.

The resounding criticism was that Nyr is the problem. I think the problem is that more people talk about the game than actually play. Why is that?

The code is badly dated, as well, while we're on topic. Not sure that's a realistic fix, though.

Because, while Nyr was obviously the largest problem, the flawed policies and precedents that he established are going to stay long after he's left... if he's even left in the first place. There are a few on the boards here that think he's going to be coming back at some point. I'm going to channel RogueRougeRanger here. Goddamnit, do not let this turn into the staff-appreciation and blowjob thread, there are more issues out there than just Nyr. There's an entire culture that needs to shift. And Desertman needs to stop saying we're "crying" because we're wanting more than a coincidental change. This board didn't cause Nyr to step back for RL issues, it just happened. It's happened before. There's a culture of boring, bureaucracy and bullshit that has been going on for many, many years. Showing up and voting just because one problem is stepping back won't be progress at all. Stop pandering, stop making it more than it is. Nyr is stepping back, not dead or retiring. But could be back next week with a "Haha!" response. Jesus Christ. No need to sweat it either way, really. I don't mind Desertman's cheerleading, myself. I personally feel there is much more wrong with Arm than just Nyr getting in the way of my having fun there, so his coincidental and temporary absence is unlikely to make a difference. Maybe other people disagree with me, and the only problem was Nyr. But the clan caps will still be around, all of Tuluk is still gone, slave roles are still gone, vertical promotion is still gone, the Kuraci Outriders are still gone, the Kadian Falcons are still gone, and yet the bureaucratic Culture of Limitation is still there. Numbers went up after the closure of Tuluk but they've been down ever since. I expect the same thing to happen with Nyr's "hiatus" because the fundamental problems remain. I, for one, am eager to see what happens. I don't think that cheerleading will change much either way because it doesn't impact what I see as the fundamental problems of Armageddon. To use the dog food analogy: the dogs don't like the dog food, and having an unliked guy take a hiatus from the board of the dog food company won't change what the dogs think of the food. Yelling at the dogs to eat the food won't make them like it more, either. This remains relevant to your question.

I'll have to read that when I'm off work in 14 or so hours. Gotta jet, though.

why the decline in numbers? At the end of the day, Armageddon has just become a really boring game.

The resounding criticism was that Nyr is the problem. I think the problem is that more people talk about the game than actually play. Why is that? Just because a few people on here wanted Nyr gone, doesn't mean everybody wanted him gone or thought that would solve the problems. The real problem is and always has been: ignoring what the players are asking for no matter how reasonable or doable the requests are and people are tired of it. Speaking of Haven, one thing they're doing right (I still think its a shitty game) it's easy to be a story runner....story is important, people want to tell a story. That seems to not be understood on Arm. What you GDB'ers aren't realizing is it's ok to talk about your game and not play, because deep down we're hoping y'all will change some fundamental flaws that have popped up. Y'all never change what really needs to be changed....it's like putting new windows on a house with a foundation that is failing. Sorry, I'm not going to go live in that house, but I can say "Hey, remember that Armageddon house? It was nice once...I wish they would fix that eroding foundation." You GDB're go "Yeah, yeah...we got new carpet though! Why don't you come live in it again and stop talking about it?" Seriously, doing little stunts and gimmicks will only work for so long before you're right back where you were. I'm really surprised the Desertman thing and Nyr "leaving" worked out for you, boasting high numbers is a feather in your cap, but if its the same game, how long is that going to last? Its the veterans that are complaining and its the veteran core you've decided to ignore. I'm sorry, but that's a fucked up way to run a game. So saying "Why don't you play" is pretty much ignoring everything the fact that the game hasn't changed yet. If it did there would be a thread about it on here already.

Haven's storyrunner thing is a decent idea in principle, but they let literally anybody do it. Imagine the very worst players on Armageddon; now imagine them with Storyteller privileges. Also imagine that you get karma for storyrunning, so the most power-hungry and ill-suited players are the ones who do 90% of it for no other reason than to empower their PCs. It turns into this really awful, amateurish shit that would make crappy fanfiction forums look like a congregation of the world's most recognized authors in comparison.
Besides that, Haven's RP is so artificial and feels like selecting adventures and plots from a menu where all the details are laid out, including which player is the storyteller behind something. I have no idea why they do it like that. Haven could be a genuinely great game if they had a clue about separating IC and OOC so that people can actually be a little immersed instead of the game inundating them with OOC information and reminders.
However, Armageddon is kind of the polar opposite with absolutely fuck-all going on. Both are pretty bad, but Armageddon's sad case of decline leaves a worse taste in the mouth as one rememebers how much better it was.
