Halaster was an abusive prick. Creative? You betcha. But you won't have fond memories of the guy unless you fell under his nepotistic jurisdiction. For the rest it's unlikely you'll see his departure as a loss for the game. It's just a shame the more current staff haven't got an ounce of creativity in them. When magically moving volcanoes is the best you can come up with it's time to pass the torch to someone who's actually inspired. I never had anything to do with him, but I'd rather have a game where a somewhat questionable admin (he wasn't nearly as bad as Nyr) makes shit happen on a regular basis, compared to today's Arm where not a fucking thing goes on. The game is so stagnant and empty now, despite the fact that a lack of other RPIs has left Arm with even more players than before. Staff is still abusive, they're just no longer making the game interesting at the same time. It's actually astonishing how bereft of noteworthy activity the game is when it has as many players as it does. I've never seen anything like it. MUDs with a third of Arm's playerbase manage to be vastly more active. I hear ya. And I agree. I'd take that lesser of two evils compared to today's watered down drivel in a heart beat. Sanvean was brimming with paranoid delusions but she sure could write well. And yes the game was more entertaining during her reign too. But you know what would be even better than that? A game where administrators operate fairly and transparently. Big dreams, I know. Shame on me.

The difference between Halaster and Bhagharva, for example, in my impression, after having been on staff with both of them, and having watched their characters develop and their styles of using those characters was that Halaster was more interested in the big story, while playing overcharged beasts and Bhagharva was more interested in personal gratification with his overcharged beasts. I'm not a condoning or supporting either method, but when it comes to the two, I watched Halaster's character be in a situation more than once where his character could go full nuke on some players, and he didn't because the guy behind that character actually respected the staff contract and the playerbase enough to not just wholesale slaughter. I once asked around, when I was on staff, if Nessalin had ever even played a character, and the answer was no, that he was only interested in playing npcs, but didn't enjoy playing at all. There's just so much history and the staff model there has been ruled at the top with some real iron-fist mentality that nothing should ever be very surprising.

Set the scene:
APM in Baltimore, a bunch of people lounging around a hotel room drinking, staffers included. Alaire is there, she's an irregular player at the time, fairly new to the game, but there to hang out with others who are more addicted that she knows IRL.
Very tall, stringy haired guy gives a nod, in his black on black attire.
Ness: "Hello there, I'm Nessalin." Her: "So?"
And he wandered off. She asks "Who was that jackass?"
"Oh he's one of the Overlords." Her: "So?"
My wife's always been cool.

Nope, never posted it anywhere, but I've shared it a couple times because it's just grim and funny.

I had very few conversations with him in the two years I was on staff, and I swear to God on a stack of babies atop a stack of bibles, he wasn't satisfied until this exact conversation happened: Me: Good morning. Nessalin: Newb. What's eating Gilbert Grape? Me: Uh, what? Nessalin: What's eating...Gilbert Grape? Me: Really? Nessalin: Answer, Newb. What's eating Gilbert Grape? Me: Uh, his mama? Nesssalin: Why? Me: Because she's fat? Nessalin: You may continue with your day.

Jesus H. Christ on a stick... It's like if the internet built the most complete neck beard and sent him back in time to run a Mud.
