Arm then Haven then SoI then Burning Post then EoE then Sindome. At least, that's how I understand it. I think LabMUD will have a good playerbase when it opens. A bunch of Atonement and prpi vets are hanging around along with Arm and SoI newbies.

Isn't SoI pretty dead these days?
Haven has high online numbers but allows you to have two characters online at a time, so it's kinda hard to say how many actual players are on. I'd also question its RPI status precisely because of features like that. It's more of a MUSH with a thin veneer of code on top.

SoI last I checked was 15-25 players peak. That's slightly higher than Burning Post and Sindome if I'm not mistaken. I think Burning Post might allow multiple characters too. And it's not fully permadeath? Don't remember.
Any of you play Firan when it was around? Funny stuff.

Harshlands had about 20 something people the last time I played, about 2 months ago. I couldn't do it because they were meta gaming like a mug.

There are currently 12 players on the isle of Harn.
That's Harshlands just now, even if it's not on that list. Currently hits anywhere from 20-30 at peak. Also rather living up to the 'harsh' part lately, since the combat code was revamped over the last couple months.

Yeah, when I mentioned Harshlands being dead but that I also hadn't played it in YEARS, someone PMed to let me know that it was actually pretty active and in what we would consider the mid-high range of players for an RPI at peak.
HL was my first RPI love and seeing it still alive and kicking brings a little warmth to my cold cynical heart.

It's worth noting that due to the difference between an RPE, RPI, and whatever other tag games give themselves. Optional Realities' lists them as text-based RPGs (or games) with the only requirements being permadeath, roleplay focused, and have automated systems. Haven is much closer to a MUD than a MUSH in my experience playing there. There were actually a couple of MUSHes I wish we could have listed but they didn't meet the requirements. Like Kushiel's Debut.
Population Based on my best guess: Armageddon > Sindome/Haven > SOI/LabMUD/EoE/BurningPost

I don't understand the differences between muds and mushes and muxs or whatever. I just know it's all text based games I log on through my client.

MUDs - Multi User Dungeons tend to be more hack and slashy with all of the systems being automated. Its most common codebase is DIKU which the majority of engines are derived from. MOO - M(something) Object Oriented tend to be a hybrid between MUDs and MUSHes in terms of code vs soft systems. HellMOO is the most famous MOO I know of. MUSH - No idea what the acronym is. These tend to be 'soft systems' where players interact with each other and staff act as unseen GMs and sometimes they'll have automated dice rolling systems that give you results but don't make coded effects take place. It's a much more co-operative RP experience but can be weakened by people not wanting to play the victim. A good MUSH is www.kushielsdebut.org/index.php/Main_PageMUX - I have no idea They are all text-based games which is why we just call our section Text-based RPGs. Easier for noobs who have never experienced the genre to dip their toe into it that way.

I don't understand the differences between muds and mushes and muxs or whatever. I just know it's all text based games I log on through my client. MUDs have a much stronger codebase. MUSHes are relatively barebones and basically like chat rooms with room descriptions. For example it's pretty rare to find a MUSH with actual coded skills or a combat system. People usually settle that stuff with dice rolling ala D&D or Shadowrun or whatever. no idea but MUXs, they seemed like some sort of compromise between the two.

I just made MUX up I don't know if it's a code base. They all just seem like acronyms to me. HellMoo is insane.

Multi-User Shared Hallucination. Typically used for cybering. Multi-User Experience. Basically a MUD with pretension, sort of between MUDs and MUSHes in how the code works.

Haven has a lot of features that I'd consider strongly non-RPI:
- Uncontrolled character creation, you don't need to submit a PC for review - An experience point system, hack'n'slash-like skill training system, and rerolling your skills at will - Multiplaying (you can have three characters at a time and be online with two of them) - OOC commands such as a who list, finger, tells and messages - While it has permadeath, PKing is almost forbidden - Freeform player-controlled item creation, you can make basically any object you want (not talking crafting, you can buy a $5 pair of shorts and turn it into an Armani suit if you want) - A page of player-made biographies for current characters with wildly sensitive IC information (people just straight up announce that they're vampires and shit)
