I've had a few crafter-types in my time, but never with stonecrafting... I've been thinking of making one instead of my usual character types. The thing is - The skill seems at odds in function to other skills, such as jeweler or salvage (since they both manipulate stones and gems). What kind of items does stonecrafting give access to, specifically? Does it use any specific tools, other than general ones? Is polishing gemstones and semi-precious stones a stonecrafting or jewellery skill? Thanks in advance! EDIT: Just so that it's clear, I realize the difference between a stone and a gemstone. (Not that certain on where 'salt crystals' fall between the two categories though.

It's a lot like leatherworking except with stone, i.e. mostly utility items that have no serious value or rarity. Think vases, boxes, izdari pieces, cutlery. I think you can make some random artsy shit as well like statuettes. Presumably a master stonecrafter could make mastercraft sculptures, but who really gives a fuck.
I'm pretty sure anything to do with gemstones falls under jewelrymaking, and tools under toolmaking.
Only stonecrafting tools that I know of are chisels and there's some kind of stoneworking drill.

You can make slightly better ammo for slingshots. You can make boxes and little statues. You can make kitchen stuff, like plates, bowls, cups, forks, spoons, etc... You can make a mortar and pestle as well as components for other crafts.
That's about it. It's nothing useful. Master craft bricks. RP staking them into walls. Master craft walls and build new structures to the game. Maybe the rinth? That would be cool. Hrm....

Yup, those marbles are higher damage sling bullets. I wonder how good is a sling with maxed archery and those marbles... KO quality at least?

I always stopped using a sling after i stopped missing game and could afford or make arrows. It should though...I know a stone bola definitely does.

Stonecrafting has a few 50-100 id recipes, like the polished obsidian mirror or the white alabaster bowls. Mostly, it is interesting for the ability to make props, to sell into a huge number of stores, and to make halves of recipes for other crafts like hafts, hammerheads, and several items than can be charged for component crafting.

All this sounds promising! Thank you for all the answers. Actually, the part about being able to sell crap to a large amounts of NPC vendors is what appeals to me the most... Trying to money with a crafting character is what ruined the concept for me back in the day. That and the 'economy' (hah).
Maybe my next grebber will stonecraft...

Stonecraft is a decent venue. I prefer jeweler personally, but that's usually pretty dependent on location/pc jeweler or merchant population as to whether or not it's viable. It's a lot rarer to find a scenario where all the places that will buy stonecrafted stuff are fully stocked on it and/or broke than it is with (worthwhile/common) jewelry stuff.

I've always had a hard time taking any subguild purely for monetary reasons, such as tailor, jeweler or stonecrafter. Sids are pretty easy to come by. Not so much in the South, I'll grant. But in the North, it's ridiculously easy with all the plants and flowers laying about.
But even in the south, there's sid mining, spice sifting and salt grebbing. Which granted, have a tiny bit more risk.
Generally though, on all my characters, after 1-2 days of playing time, I'm creatively avoiding making sids, more than actually seeking them out. I've often wished in the past that the economy was harsher, such that a player bringing in meat to eat was a real boon.
Anyhow. In that sense, I've always picked subguilds based on what they could offer in other respects, and I think in 99% of all circumstances, that is the best way to go.

Yea, it's too easy to make coins. Never pick a subguild to make coins unless 100K is your goal. What to spend 100K on ICly? I don't know.... Krathi rings?

Having played one or two grebbers, I have to say that most of the money-making methods you describe are mind-numbingly boring, take forever and ever and ever and are dangerous to boot (mostly because of other players). At least crafting has the advantage of 'less' danger and 'more' boredom... Besides, looking at the monetary side of things, sids 'are' easy to come by, starting at around mid-level play. Before that, when your grebber is selling tufted plant stems for 2 sids a branch, you kind of wish you were a crafter. I know I did, when I had an indie grebber... Edit: Also, when I roll a crafter, it's to RP a crafter, not make money. Just saying...

I can imagine nobility would pay greatly for mastercrafted statues etc... Ohhh you can make bad-ass spice pipes.
