You know dcdc, you could sign up to be his builder and as your final blow, you could replace all grey with gray.
You know you want to

Bumping it once more because:
Bitter, nyrsucks and toptek
if you, and anyone else who has the time, resources and the capability to work on this should really work on this
Because, let me say this out since I am drunk enough to not care about anyuthing else: This is the mud that WE ALL WANT. You may hear that people "I like less gritty" or "I like more magick" or "I like more furries"... they are all responding out of reflexive bullshit that we all use against any change
we all want a mud where we are capable of having an effect on the game. We all want a game where what we do, is not a job of a fucking vNPC. We want a game where we are constantly busy. We may relax, but there is constant work that need to be done and we can help the gameworld by doing it, or we can slack off and not give a shit but.. it is up to us. We also want to own stuff, the world may be gritty, but we like to own an apartment where we can have a table, a desk and a fucking bed where we never codedly sleep but the possibility is there if we wanted to. We too want to be part of a game where we have friends. mnot for the sake of passing time but to feel that if we do not log in for a while, otjher people may wonder or even get worried what happened to us. We want to be part of a community that as a whole, with all the griefs and the good things, feels like home
and fucki you if you give up on this because you feel it will fail
It . Will. Not.
I have a life. A wife and a son and I have little time besides work since, as long as I can think, I am working. Even I want to play a game such as this.
i tell you now you too want oto play a game where the PCs ciontrol the gameworld/. you may have your wishes with the magick and the code to give you this and that, but that is all secondary. It really is. That is why we played armageddon. We went there for the possiblility of playing -anything we want- and we stayed there for the PC interaction.
I formulated you a way to combine all our wishes together: jheavy pc interaction, pcs affecting the outcome of things even the history of the game, a game where there is always a need to do something suchj as gather resources, a game where we can have our own cozy space in the way we want and a game where there is all sorts of adventure and exploration.
And this is not even the only way. I shit you not if you made a game of furries with all these combined, I would play it and within a few months, a lot more would join in.
bye
also fuck you i am drunk

You know dcdc, you could sign up to be his builder and as your final blow, you could replace all grey with gray. theyd still show up as "grey"

PCs should definitely not control the gameworld. That's the job of the DM/GM. The PCs should however enjoy telling their stories and be able to climb up to any rank and lead clans, and lead plots, and whatever else. The world itself is bigger than the players though.

Yeah, while I definitely think it'd be awesome and viable to strike out and 'make a settlement' of a sort, with time, energy, and effort, where your pc is the ruler, I don't think that making that the main settled area where it's run by 1 person who is supposed to be a player rather than an npc or even a council that gets too out of whack, would be a detriment.

Start with learning C. Almost all mud code derives from DIKU which was written in C. c.learncodethehardway.org/book/You can also learn some C++ to help, but in the end downloading and compiling a stable MUD codebas is not that hard. There are a ton out there, from MERC/ROM/DIKU. You can google DIKU codebase or ROM codebase and find a download link I am sure. Once you have it downloaded you need to upload that file via FTP to a linux machine. These shells usually cost about 5-6$ per month. I used to use www.genesismuds.com to host mine and the Admin there is a pretty smart guy who can help you set something up. After its compiled you can connect to the socket like any mud and use the OLC and all that jazz.

Hey I studied comp engineering so I know C and onject oriented languages, Java .net, php, database languages, etc... I have my server that I host my own websites, Thanks a lot I will read more about existing codebases, if I come up with any question I will bother you once again

Delerak, quick question. Do you know which alternative is simplest and least complicated (lean) to start with based on your experience?
"What is the difference between Circle, Merc, and Silly?" There is a lot of differences between the codes, some that are easily recognizable by players, some that are not. CircleMUD is the closest to the original Gamma Diku with a lot of the bugs patched plus a lot of new features built in. It can compile on almost any platform, including Amigas and Windows 95. SillyMud is a very large and heavily modified release and if I remember what the author of this code (or maybe it was someone else) said is "it is big and it is ugly". Silly is filled with features but is has not been patched up to run on all systems, so beware it might take some hacking to get this to work on your machine. MercMUD is yet another highly developed and very different release. It has been made to work with a variety of machines including Macintosh and is very compact. The MercMUD base has branched off into a number of different bases now, including ROM, EnvyMUD, and SMAUG. It is recommended that you give each release your attention to find out which code is best for you, because none is specfically better than the other in general terms, it is up to you find out what you prefer. Further additions to this section are welcome, including comparing new code bases that exist. See also the question on which derivatives are available in the previous section.

Merc is a great codebase. In fact I think SOI/Harshlands were based off of MERC.
Honestly the simplest and least complicated codebase has to be DIKU. DIKU started it all and it's still one of the most stable codebases in existence. There are better alternatives for an RPI of course you have the RPI engine (which is a huge mess, full of memory leaks and bugs). So it all depends if you want I have an old DIKU code heavily modified by Rob Peckham called SwordQuest. It was a great codebase and it was the original code I used for Darksun but it's very simple and didn't have a lot of the features the RPI engine had so I scrapped it. I have a copy somewhere on my cloud I will check and see if Rob is okay with me releasing it first.

i'd recommend looking for a cheap copy of MUD Game Programming. it's not the best book to mearn programmng practices from. but it's fairly solid and the two MUDs were well thought out. And the chapters on network sockts and prevnting certain attacks were definitely worth reading. It's a c++ book and comes with the libraries the author wrote on an includd cd

Never. Like every other person who claims their potential work is better than something else, but never seems to get around to doing it. I suppose it's better to dream than not at all though. So everyone can keep up their hopes.
