Thing is, anyone can abuse anything. And the ones who will do it, will do it. Trying to curb it won't really stop it. Eh, i've never been a subscriber to this kind of thinkng. Because the alternative is lettng widespread abuse run unchecked. It comes down to coming up with a system where things are transparnt and not punishing people for complainng about how you do things. Thats the process. You keep tweaking it until youre pissing off the least number of people. Meh. Fuck karma. First of all how do you even know someone is capable of playing something without them playing it? Thats exactly why the kind of system I proposd was based around things people could do without having points first. For example, say you have moderately powerful magickrs available to anyone. But you limit sorcs to people whove shown they dont abuse bugs and dont play a mage like a complete twat (e.g. every mage is a suicide bomber with a hardon for the Gaj). You make things like that into prereqs, rather than vague shit that doesnt even relate to what people can play. Thats only really applicable if your games going to have classes or sponsord roles. No kind of trust system is feasible if you're going classless (all skills are available to up) and as a sandbox "you can only be what you make yourself into" route.

I agree that the way karma is implemented now is unfair. I would hate, hate, hate to see a newbie sorcerer who can barely emote, though. Yes. In many ways, even though the concept of karma is bullshit for a lot of the reasons anaiah and delerak mentioned...There does have to be some progression. You should play a human before you play a mul, dwarf or half-giant. I know delerak especially has once thought that dwarves should be a karma race, in the past. You should play a mundane before you play a magicker. You should play a magicker before you play a sorcerer or psionicist. You should have some knowledge of the city-state before playing a templar. This isn't about keeping people down or staff jerking themselves off to feel superior. This is just as good, clean common sense, that helps you as much as it helps the playerbase. I can't think of a single persuasive reason to let a newbie play something like a gith before a human. But once someone has demonstrated an in-game knowledge, and lack of abusive behavior (like ISP abuse or other OOC chicanery), they should gain 'karma' much more quickly than they do in Arm. Not only that, karma is a way of maintaining consistent standards and giving people a reason to try their best. I don't think karma should be a staff prerogative to reward and take away as they please. But some kind of system needs to be in place. It doesn't have to be handled like Armageddon, though. If someone has a certain level of karma, they should be able to app whatever they want. I'd simply have certain roles/classes have a timer on them, so even if you had 7 karma, you couldn't app 12 muls in a month. You could app one, but then would have a cooldown period. That is an example of a system which both encourages a rational and responsible approach to more powerful roles, while divorcing it from any possible accusation of staff bias. Your sorc died cause you were a stupid fuck, even though you have 8 karma somehow? Too bad. App another next year. If someone goes through high karma characters like Is Friday, they'll eventually be reduced to lower karma roles without a cooldown period, anyways.
