Not very cute if you ask me.
In 2004, I remember falling for the April fools thing hard. I logged onto the GDB from a western union center at infantry school, and hell, I can't even remember what the joke was. I would look it up on the gdb, but eating half a dozen pepperoni hot pockets seems a far better way to give myself a stomach ache.
I do miss the books thread, though.
I read Dune for the first time last week!
!!!!!!
Can we have a "what are you reading" thread here???

you actually do if it's an essential part of your job. but anyway lol that someone will get 2 points of karma for playing a clanned character 5 hours a week for 6 months. any of our newbs want to try and take that challenge? I can already tell you thats not true. Think, feel, more than two word emotes....emoting better than everyone around you, regular character reports, none of that would matter. The thread didn't get out of control, but I wouldn't call it productive either. You had: "I don't get karma either" (ie I don't know how to get karma), request account notes" (he clearly said in the beginning thats how he got his 1 karma), "Is this an April Fool's joke?", "try emoting, thinking or feeling while you're solo playing...it's boring to watch you do coded actions", "Do a special app". Those are standard gdb responses. My favorite response was from the op saying he was toldby Nyr himself not to bother with a special app because he wouldnt get it before. The truth is, what gets you karma is amusing staff, doing wacky things...things they can fuck with you on. You want to play a competent person....nah, thats boring, enjoy your one karma, you're written off. You play off peak? We're not going to animate an npc or throw out an echo, we're going to pop in on you that one time you're sitting in your barracks spam crafting knives and write you off. What gets you karma is them enjoying watching you....except...if you are doing something you're not supposed to, thats the only way theyre going to watch you. Want to know what got Sanvean noticed by staff years ago? Her character got arrested (doing something she wasn't supposed to) and started saying random Monty Python quotes (It made whoever was watching her laugh). You'd probably get karma docked if you did that now, but the idea is the same....amuse them. When I first started the game, my mentor at the time told me the game was mostly for the Staff's enjoyment. At the time I wrote him off but after so many years I realize he was pretty much spot on.

When I first started the game, my mentor at the time told me the game was mostly for the Staff's enjoyment. At the time I wrote him off but after so many years I realize he was pretty much spot on. You know what's funny? I came to this realization on my own a while back and I have a serious problem with it. It may be that I naively believe RP is a collaboration between players and staff, and a MUD is a "black box" so to speak. Thats why I've been saying, if they just run little things and just animate just a little more, people really wouldn't care about other things. I literally watched a clan leader put together a core team of competent players with different personalities, very good RP'ers and very little happens for them. I dont want to go too much into detail, but I don't want to play a game where I don't get anything for doing my job like the docs say I'm supposed to. I may be in the minority, but I don't log on to kill the tembo or make 300 sids, I log in to interact with people and the world. I dont want to spam walk from Allanak to Tuluk, I actually want to take my time and have banter on the way and maybe have a random encounter while I'm doing it. But I realized Arm is not that kind of game. Arm is like sex with a guy that pulls out just when you're about to cum...and then goes to sleep on you. A relationship like that, just can't continue. Ultimately, whatever concept you come up with won't really work because youre like an npc....youre the animation, not the other way around. Thats fucked up. I don't want to be an ant in someone's ant farm. I had a problem with this on Southlands/EOE and I have a oroblem with it on Arm too. I'm not liking the mixed message of "Follow the docs" "Entertain us, by not following the docs". I'm just not feeling it.

Eh, it's hard to get excited for the 1000th trip outside and set a three hour trip to Tuluk or Allanak just to please some people's desire to stop and see the sights. I mean you always got to deal with time constraints due to RL and etc. You can't please anyone in the game one way or the other.

Eh, it's hard to get excited for the 1000th trip outside and set a three hour trip to Tuluk or Allanak just to please some people's desire to stop and see the sights. I mean you always got to deal with time constraints due to RL and etc. You can't please anyone in the game one way or the other. My point wasn't about making one of about four possible trips (It could be anywhere really) and stopping to have a picnic. It's not so much making the trip, if making the trip is your job; it's that nothing happens on the trip, even the 1000th one. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough. It's not even in the players hands to make something happen...you just kind of go and hope something happens....but alas nothing usually does. I get what you're saying, because it's part of what I'm saying. It IS hard to get excited about making a trip for the hundredth time, meaning you're not really going to emote anymore and you're kind of on autopilot, but you're just doing your job. How many times can you emote "the lithe, wild haired warrior bitch looks around alertly" before you say to yourself "Fuck this" because you aren't wary? I mean is it really that hard to make something interesting, funny, scary to happen on the way? Isn't that what you write reports for? So whoever reads them can say "Ok the Byn is escorting Salarr to Allanak again, how can we make this more interesting?" Halfway there..they find a kid. Common sense: they'll probably take the kid back to Allanak with them. Surprise the staff: They trample him and keep going. Surprise the players: The kid is actually a halfling scout and he calls for backup! Ok so all you badasses kill the halfling in about ten seconds. But it gives you something to talk about on the way, it was different. That little thing would make people really, really happy. What I'm saying is I have the feeling that, that dialogue doesn't happen with staff and it's a fucked up feeling to have, but that's how I feel right now. I don't want to store and keep creating characters until I luck up and find the staffer that's doing that. I'm not saying that staff should be all "Oh, shit! Ja'lyssa logged on, lets do something!" either, its a reciprocal thing (at least to me). I like the character I have and I like the people I'm playing with....I'm just not liking the game itself right now.

Here's an idea: a system of "change the world points". Each account slowly accumulates them according to time played (not just time since creation). They can be spent by the player on making small changes to the world that reflect outcomes of the player's plots and actions. E.g. changing room descs, creating a quest object, etc. Staff could award extra points to players they deem "worthy".
Now queue the laughter at the chance of such a thing ever being implemented on Arm. ha... haha.... HAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Change the world points would just be another layer of busywork to the process and they'd be negated by staff setting the 'cost' of changes which allow them to make it as accessible or out of reach as they want.

Armageddon isn't like a dude who's about to make you cum, but instead pulls out.
It's like getting gang raped by a pack of hive minded, pudgy, angry nerds with pantyhoses on their heads while a half dozen teenagers and Tweens who they've given karma and who have played the game 1/10 the time you have all furiously masturbate as they watch.
Suppressed gag reflex, indeed.
