I put up a forum: darksunmud.com/forums
This should sync up with the game accounts via the mud itself. I'm still working out some bugs with the SQL though so don't hold your breath. I leave for 2 weeks tomorrow but I'll be back to finish up the forums before I deploy and can't do anything but check email and the forums.

Registration disabled until I can figure out why the hell the game accounts won't migrate over to the forums.

Fixed it. Do note that I am only in port for another 4-5 days or so. Until then just email me delerak@darksunmud.com with any problems so I can start a list of fixes and get to them when I return from my deployment.

We made some attempts to set up the version on SourceForge, through a few individuals associated with my current project, but we could never quite figure out why we couldn't get it to run. There seemed to be a few issues going on at once for those who tried.
We had high hopes of utilizing the codebase and making it come to life, but regrettably, there's something everyone who's looked at it has missed. Certainly, assistance with setup or even a functional snapshot would be appreciated.

Well you can login and see it working: darksunmud.com port 2727. I have no doubt that it works (I cited to others the fact that you had a site up as proof that it could), just the why of what we're missing. As I said, guidance or a functional snapshot would be gratefully received for our project. We were able to see the contents of the game from the outside once we located the Darksun SQL files in the separate .arj directory, and we were impressed by what was in there. None of us can really explain why we couldn't get it to work. I had hoped to consult with you and find some success before you deploy again. At any rate, it's a generous contribution to the community. Anyone who can use it would no doubt find it to their benefit to do so, as Delerak's put a lot of work into it.

I'm aware of the bug where creating new accounts now isn't sending the automatically generated password. I'll try to fix this before we leave Bahrain but no promises.

Thank you, Delerak. I'll try to "stop" by and check the place out. Great to have this up and running, particularly given your own deployment situation.

I'm back in port for a while, want to apologize for not being active. I've had a lot of time to think and I'm going to hit the ground running on this when I get back. I have a lot of code written up for an unique psionics system I can't wait to implement and let you guys fool around with. You'll be able to do all sorts of cool stuff with some of the skills like mass contacting multiple PCs, moving objects telepathically, levitation, psionic flight, and a bunch of other stuff. These will be latent abilities that anyone can learn in the game.

I'm glad I have access to these forums (normally I don't), I can't login to the game to approve any characters but I will as soon as I am able.

I've decided to go it alone this time. Can't rely on anyone but yourself to be honest. Obviously I will entertain skilled coders and writers to come on eventually if I reopen the thing.

Understandable, it will just be very hard to keep it going while you're deployed. I was joking about volunteering myself, but if you have anyone you think you can trust to run things while you're not around, this could help it get going. What about Lulz? He seems a pretty chill corespondent. Or, Jcarter, or, there's Aniah, I've always found her to be good conversation, patient, even with an undesirable lunatic like myself. The only post I've ever taken issue with from Jcarter was the one where he outed IsFriday, it put a lot of barriers in IsFriday's communications with us, if he wishes to keep playing the game he loves.
But I see your point. Arm does seem to suffer from issues with "Too many chiefs". I've been debating in my mind just what's complicated about it. In order to ensure checks and balances are maintained, that power is not being abused, that players are not being treated with undue amount of favoritism, this creates a lot of work, this prevents staff from performing many tasks without appealing to authority, and, with good reason. Reading about what happened to Kronibas, among other players, such as Asandas, or anyone who posts here who's had a serious issue with one staffer or other, well, I'd really hope they're trying to check that, but that it continues to happen is evidence that... well, too many chiefs, someone complained about a staff member. Circle the wagons, the savages are attacking our values! One bad apple poisons the bunch, when you trust your staff much more than the players, who also struggle to maintain the quality of the game, but typically staff are vetted.
Still, people are human, and humans make mistakes. This has always been true and will continue to be true. Cannot expect perfection, sacrifices must be made, and where allowable, corners must be cut. My mother is a perfectionist, she does not understand this, and this is why, she needs help cleaning the house. She needs someone who will cut corners. It's not a small house, and there are many nooks and crannies, if she doesn't see it, then it didn't happen, and her mind can be at ease. There is a reason for this, my younger brother had some severe allergy problems while younger, dust would cause him very much irritation. Some things, must be dusted. But one cannot, at all times, keep everything, everywhere, free of dust. Sacrifices were made, I found out what caused the most problems, and, you know, every now and then I'd really hit every, single, thing... I too, am a perfectionist, but only in some senses. I don't think there's much wrong with aspiring to perfection, except where it inhibits completion to an unnacceptable degree. This causes me problems on the job, as others, particularly, in customer service, see fit to cut corners that I do not find acceptable, while adhering to policies that I find unnacceptable.
This is why, when I'm working at a video rental store, for example, we get a customer, he's flipping out on the poor girl working with me, I step in, and say, "What seems to be the issue, sir? My coworker doesn't always possess the proper communication skills." and so, he'd start talking to me, and in response, I'd agree with him, inserting a slew of unproffessional cursewords, he'd calm, even laugh. I'd done this a number of times before. Customers don't give a flying fuck about your winsome smile or the words coming out of your mouth, they give a fuck about you being a human fucking being who can act with a shred of integrity and show that you can understand their goddamn problem, why it's a problem, and that, while you can't do much to fix the fucking problem, because you're simply not allowed, this is what you CAN do, and you appreciate the customer's business and wish it, sincerely, to continue. You're also not allowed to curse on the job, but fuck that noise.
Respect for the customers needs, and wants. They are not, cattle to be butchered, they are not an inconvenience. They are why you wake up in the morning, put on that goofy fucking smock, and drink a fuckload of instant coffee. You may not be able to say everything they want to hear, but you will share with them, interactions that really make your day worth waking up for. You step into the place telling yourself, today is going to be a good fucking day, today is the day I outsell every one of my coworkers, because, they have their head up their ass when it comes to priorities. I will even assist them in removing it, if they're capable. You'd be surprised how infectious a good attitude can be on the job, and its transformative effect on the numbers.
