my understanding was using a shield or a sword only put the order of your 'defenses' differently, so that it would do a shield check, then a parry check, and then a 'defense' check. or the first two reversed - point being, defense didn't 'disappear' from being checked for usage or advancement just because other things were in front of it It doesn't disappear from being checked for practical purposes, but for skill ups it does. Unless it's the only thing that is being used, since it has lowest priority amongst the 3. Total defense is always ordered in the same way, every time. Dodge Parry Block Dodge and parry are added together as a static total defense score. Say both are 50. So you have a 100 total score. An attack has a total of 120. It hits. An attack has a total of 60. You parry it. An attack has a total of 30. You dodge it. Your "you dodge it" range is 1-50. Your "you parry it" range is 51-100. They have a range, and you can make educated guesses about the opponents offense, relative to your own defenses. However, they are added together for the purposes of not getting hit. Block only comes in with a shield, of course. It also only comes in when an attack hits past your static defenses, dodge+parry. That attack with the total of 120 did hit past your static defenses. Let's say your a warrior with capped shield-use of 45. The game then makes a shield-use check. It's a simple skill check. It is not opposed to the opponent's anything. Meaning shield-use only depends on how good you are. Not with how good they are, or the skill differences between the both of you. This is also why shield-use is pretty powerful. Even against someone vastly better then you, capable of hitting you everytime. You'd still have a baseline of 45% chance to block everything, if your a SU-capped warrior. That's before any shield-use bonuses from stats or items.

so 'defense' is the combination of dodge + parry, thus it is impossible for a merchant to get a fully maxxed 'defense' since they don't get parry? or is 'defense' something other than the 'static defense' u described earlier?
also, assuming 'defense' is really just 'static defense', can you describe/explain what 'offense' also?

The Defense skill governs your ability to dodge. When I said dodge in the above post, I'm talking about the defense skill. I'm not sure what else to call the defenseskill+parry, other then total defense score.
A merchant can max the defense skill. In that case they'd have a 100+0 total defense.
1-100 on an attack would mean that they dodge it. 100+ on an attack would mean that they get hit.
There -is- a parry range they'd have, but it might only be 1 or 2 numbers. Something with the stat bonus/item bonus to skills. This is why without the parry skill you can rarely parry attacks.
Offense works in a similar way. It's just weaponskill+offense=total static offense.
I call it a static total, since I'm not factoring in the dice rolls.
In another thread they explained how offense is actually multiple offense skills based on target's body-type. So keep that in mind.
It's really just Defense+Parry+Diceroll vs Offense+Weaponskill+Diceroll
at least as far as I can tell.

Are people sure that defense will never increase when a parry-having character fights armed? Because that would mean that a lot of warriors go through life with more or less base defense. It doesn't seem right. You could have a 100-day warrior with everything maxed, but if you never took the time to fight unarmed, you'd have whatever defense skill you started with.
I suspect it probably just goes up faster when fighting unarmed, because every hit checks against defense, whereas getting hit while armed means any attack roll that falls within a range that checks against parry won't check against defense. But any attack that falls within the range where it's your dodge that it checks against will be able to raise your defense.
Doesn't that make way more sense? I can see how that would lead to the misconception that defense can't raise when fighting armed, probably when somebody tried to drunkenly explain the above at an APM in 2001 or some shit.

I can confirm at least that using a shield does not prevent the parry skill from improving. I had a warrior character who trained exclusively with a shield, and his parry increased a rank before he had achieved mastery with the shield.

Actually, it's something I've noticed too, that defensive skills these days seem to go up while using other defensive skills, it's possible a code change went in that wasn't mentioned because it would reveal too much code to be acceptable on the GDB, or maybe we were all full of shit for a while, but I doubt it, because I know BEFORE I noticed gains in defensive skill seemed restricted to a list of priorities depending on which skills you were utilizing.
