Ok, some people swear by these PCs. What are your thoughts? Currently active clans? Fun to play? Comparison to closed clans? Role-play advice? Guild/Sub-guild advice? Racial expectations, inc stats etc...? Any other tidbits and anecdotes which come to mind thanks all!!

Great concept if the game peaked at 200 players instead of 50-60ish. Desert-elves suck when there aren't several open and thriving tribes, but the game has never been able to really support that.

A couple of the d-elf clans were magick friendly. Their documentation was pretty fleshed out as opposed to city elves who "are dishonest and steal stuff". As far as guild advice, just about any realistic combination of ranger/whatever or warrior/whatever works out really well, don't forget some of them are magick friendly too.

Not a big fan of elves. I love the theory and cultural documentation for a lot of them, but dislike the across the board stealing and lack of riding ability as a player, so I never really did much as regards playing them. The Sun Runners allow Krathi and Vivaduan pcs if you get the application preapproved. The Sun Runners are much more interesting in documentation to me than the SLK, but both can be interesting I suppose, if you're looking to play that type of role. It is fairly isolated compared to most city based pcs but definitely has its interesting points.

Desert elves as a race are awesome. They are codedly hardier than C-elves, and have a big stamina boost (something like 160 on average before adding desert gear). Couple that with the fact that the only loose like 2-3 stamina per screen if they're running in the desert, and you've got yourself a highly mobile explorer race. Also, all elves get master desert sneak and hide, regardless of race. So that's pretty cool.
The problem with desert elves these days are the tribes, or more aptly the lack thereof. When I personally first got my d-elf karma, there were something like 8 tribes open. All you had to do to play a tribe was put it in your background. There were like 3 tribes with coded camps, and if you chose to play one of them you could point to the tribe when you started, or point to the Desert Elf Outpost if you were playing one of the non-coded tribes. But, as time progressed the available tribes lessened and lessened. You would have to ask others as to why this happened - I couldn't possibly guess what reason the imms had, except that the last tribe they closed, the Akei Ta Var, were probably closed to bring all the tribes into the Pah. (See General Discussion thread: "Diluting the playerbase" isn't a thing.) To my mind, the ultimate irony here is that, in an attempt to centralize elven roleplay, they've effectively removed desert elves from, you know, the desert. If you want to see one you have to go to either the Pah or Luirs, but they don't exist in the wild anymore. They're pandas.
The other issue here is that the two tribes remaining open are, in my opinion, two of the dullest tribes out there.
Soh Lanah Kah A xenophobic tribe who is over-protective of the Pah. They worship anakores, they say "Kah" so frequently you'll want to stick climbing spikes in your ear drums, and they raid any non-desert elf who comes into the Pah. (Read: no one. They raid no one. The only people who come into the Pah are groups of city clannies too large to openly confront, or magickers too fast/powerful/portable to catch.) Also, they rarely ever leave the Pah, so if you're bored, you effectively don't have the option of going anywhere else. The SLK are, the dullest tribe in the game. And they're one of the two playable options.
Sun Runners Flamboyant, sun worshiping merchants who only drink beer, not water (because beer contains no water in it I guess). As sun worshipers, they revere Krathis. They also keep Vivaduan slaves because some of the more potent liquors they make require vivaduan water, despite containing absolutely no water, as previously mentioned. While their mages rarely leave the Pah, their merchants and hunters have a pretty free discretion to run around the known selling tribe goods and liquor. I actually find this tribe pretty fun and playable, despite the contradictions I rag on.
Akei Ta'Var Basically the Navi from Avatar. The Akei Ta'Var are nature worshiping hippies. Their favorite past time is roaming the grasslands, and raiding people who over hunt, waste resources, or chop down trees. They're also the most openly magickal tribe in the game. They allow all mages (except maybe Nilazis) and up to one preserver at a time. Because of these, they were basically the catch-all for D-elf mages in the last couple of years they were open. Their documentation says that elementalists are to be pitied for having only one aspect (element) of nature in them, while mundanes are better because they balance all aspects. Despite this, however, everyone in this tribe is a magicker. (I'm just as guilty of this as anyone else, I'll admit.) Like the SLK, they are extremely xenophobic, and the imms won't allow you to leave the grasslands, except maybe the occassional trip to the Pah. They frequently have good relations with the Sun Runners. Not a horrible tribe, except that they could have benefited from a set amount of elementalists. When I played them, it was all mages and maybe one ranger. Which ultimately boiled down to a lot of flowery magicker RP, and nobody doing the actual nature revenging part of their documentation, which is really the most interesting thing about them.
These are just the tribes I personally have experience with. My overall belief is that Desert Elves could benefit greatly from having a few more tribes open, and especially tribes outside of the Pah. I think elves are supposed to be the most populace race (don't quote me on this) simply for the fact that they survive virtually everywhere out in the desert. As it stands today, they are NOWHERE in the desert.

Everything you said was pretty much spot on, tektolnes. And I'd like to add that the reason why no one but the people you refer to comes into the tablelands (anymore) is because of all the raiding. Congratulations, SLK players, this is what success in defending your land so that nothing that's ass you can't kick comes there. Nothing that's ass you can't kick comes there. Enjoy your empty sandbox. That is where the Red Fangs really had it, IMO. The roleplay opportunities available by swearing to them and/or paying tribute. It's a much better situation from a perspective of people wanting to actually interact, because it doesn't drive interaction to nothing.

Yup. And Red Fangs actually had more going for them than "raid because raid." They would prefer to find you useful, than to merely get your coins. You had to go out of your way (flee, attack back, refuse to RP, etc) to be killed by Red Fang. SLK on the other hand wants you dead because you're in their land. No more RP to be gained. Sorry. And it's not even their land, honestly. They share it with several other D-elf tribes, and even other human tribes. But because of their xenophobia, its imossible to play a human tribal who could call even one little corner of the Pah home.
Additionally, the imms actively discourage players against playing non-combat roles such as merchants. If they weren't passably friendly with the Sun Runners, they would have no outside RP at all.
Fuck! WORST. TRIBE. EVER.

I don't want to get into too much, but there were SLK that wanted to change the SLK. It nearly divided the coded clan/players in two. Not all SLK characters/players suck, even though I've been a victim before to their no RP random bullshit. They really need a leader or a small coalition of players (2-3) to get in there and show them how to evolve. Tribes don't kill just anyone forever. That's how they die.

You know nothing of what you speak tektolnes, and the fact that anaiah is reccing your shit only further illustrates how much she as a player failed to learn during her time on Armageddon.
The SLK are not raid/kill all the time.
Look at Masha. Look at Kija. Look at Flint Sky.
They were not about (at least during my time) killing for the sake of killing. If you are unwilling to discuss this and are content with retaining your myopic viewpoint, then I feel sorry for you.
If anyone needs help/advice/tips on how to roleplay a desert elf, message me.

They really need a leader or a small coalition of players (2-3) to get in there and show them how to evolve. Tribes don't kill just anyone forever. That's how they die. I am not saying that the SLK suck. I am saying that this is a perfect example of 'winning the game' actually turning into a punishment for players because it kills interaction with those outside a tiny fraction of players. Just like the people who debate the merits of actually playing a Red Robe templar vs 'storing because you won the game and made yourself such a small factor in RP with those outside a tiny handful of people'. Some people want to play that out and don't think it sucks to do. Some people think it sucks to do. I was actually overseeing the SLK for several months alongside Calavera before I retired from staff. I know that they don't suck and didn't mean to imply it - I thought I went out of the way not to try and come across as being negatively judgemental while trying to post a thought out observation on the how and why the reason why what tektolnes posted was so. lulz: Uh... yeah, as a PLAYER I never played a desert elf outside a shortlived whiran with the Akeita Var. I did, however, STAFF ALL THE DESERT ELVES FOR A WHILE. But I wouldn't know anything about what the players there were doing when I was actively monitoring them. I'm sure the three pcs in the history of the clan that you posted show the majority rather than the exception. And yes, I am being snarktastic, because of the implication made in what was said about me. Frankly, I'm offended by the implication that because my opinion is different, there's been a 'failure to learn' on my part 'as a player'. Nor did I say anywhere that they were all raid and kill all the time. I'm know that they are not. I am saying that the xenophobia and killing of people resulted in literally the exact aims that the clan was trying for via the docs. They don't have to go patrolling to keep people out of the Pah anymore because they chased off all the ones they'd be able to kill. I never said it was to the exclusion of anything. I just said it was a thing they did. And it was.
