In the case of combat, is it still 1 fail -> chance -> timer? Back in the old days, all skills leveled the way I described. I left sometime after Arm 2 was announced. The best way to level your combat skills was always to dual wield different branches of weapon back then. I'm almost completely certain that most skills are a guaranteed increase on failure. It's possible the code was updated since I originally played and had more sources. Previously it was a probability that only triggered on fail. You may be right about the present. I did notice I was leveling faster but I figured that was because I selected high wisdom.

They know where to find free water, free food, and what to hunt. Whether their character current character even knew these locations and information. I used to play like this, but after years and years.... just no. I've had well over 100 PCs, and I'm not going to rediscover the world with each and every one of them. I don't pretend to know detailed stuff, but if I'm a rinthi I know where the good hiding spots are, and where I can find illegal goods. If I'm an Allanaki, I know where the water cave is. If I'm a hunter, I know where to find Cenyr. If I'm a Tuluki who's never been south of Luirs, I may pretend not to know the south well, but I get thirsty I'm damn sure going to "luck out" and find a watering hole. Pray tell, where is this south well?

From what I understand, the Byn basically consists of people who log in, spar, and then log off. You're probably fine. Please tell me you're fucking with me. Serious? So I haven't been missing much playing an independent north? It's really not quite that bad (I'd even go so far as to say it's not quite like that all)-- but it largely depends on who's in the Byn with you. As with any clan, I guess. There've been some pretty experienced players in and out of the Byn as of late, with sprinkles of nub sauce of course, but they're at least learning. c:

Anytime I've been in the Byn, maybe 20% of the players have been actual roleplayers worth playing with. The rest have been either complete newbies, who are welcome but nevertheless suck horribly at roleplaying, or just those worthless veterans who never were and never will be more than minimally acceptable at roleplaying and only ever learned to abuse the everloving shit out of the code. It really is the very worst part of the game to come looking for roleplay, to the point where you can tell that many of the members aren't even trying because they've just joined for their year of training and have no inclination to really play their character with any kind of effort until they're done in the Byn.
Last time I was in the Byn, there was a guy I was certain was someone's first character. Like I had no doubt that this guy had been playing for less than a month. Barely emoted, twinked like hell, spammed combat skills without restraint for the entirety of sparring matches, did all kinds of absurd and unexplainable things, didn't even try to capitalize and punctuate properly, and had a description that wouldn't have passed the review on most other RPIs. Upon joining the clan forum (the request took five days lol), I discovered that the player was in fact a veteran of 10+ years whom I remember playing a mul (very poorly, granted) several years ago in another clan I was in. The Byn really is the refuge of the irredeemably bad.
