I guess if I think over my own evidence and records, I can't rule out that improvement is possible, so I am willing to concede that point to your experience, A. If you say you've branched on such a cast before, I'll believe it. I still find it very hard to believe that the chance is the same, though, because I've never branched on a cast like that even once, though I tried to use it as my main way of getting improves on multiple mages. Regular cast fails have always been harder to get but every branch has been on one.

if you have circumstances where mana doesn't matter for you casting, it is possible to go from wek to mon power level with overcasting in a couple of hours. in my experience, progress is more measured and sedate when not overcasting in this regard. Precisely why it works more quickly to overcast. Once you have the reach to mon, you can cast at kral all day long for 10 mana each, and get your fails that way, while already being able to use the spell for reduced mana at higher reaches (thus making you more quickly viable when the ability is needed). Usually I overcast to the end of branching 2-3 key spells per guild and let the rest progress as they will. Which tends to go much more slowly.

I don't believe I would overcast much with my mages, but rather I would just wait until the spell reaches mon and then cast at wek. That's just what worked for me personally, but it's been so damn long who knows.
Halaster mentioned a few years ago the first tier spells were designed to branch faster since they start at 60 on a cap of 90 I believe. Branched spells however come in much, much lower I believe (around 40), which is why it takes longer to branch them.

Yuqa. It's not to skill up as fast as absolutely possible. This is why I overcast during practice:
If you fail, you have a chance of skilling up (possibly reduced) If you succeed, you have a chance of levelling up your power word. If you level up your power words more quickly, you get to a point where you can lowball cast pretty quickly and that makes your starting spells more easily cast multiple times from a limited mana pool while still having a chance to branch your spells in decent turnaround time.
