If they're mon components chances are good that you're going to have to craft them

Yes, BUT where can you get the stuff, I have seen slate lying around in some places, but where are the most common places you can safely gather it.?
What are the other items made from anyway?

I've found slate out near the span on the north road near Tuluk(south along the cliff especially) but not too often and I wouldn't call that safe.
I THINK the kaleidescope is avaliable for sale in Cenyr.

The soapstone figurine seems very familiar, I may have seen it for sale with one of the traders in Nak or Luirs. Sorry I cant be more descriptive.

Soapstone figurines are artifacts that are extremely hard to forage for. They are difficult to find, but they are there.
Slate is the same way. I've found it in odd places, and very rarely. I once spent an entire day (90 minutes) foraging for slate and didn't find anything, even though I knew it could be found in that particular area.

slate used to be found in the cave that was southwest of Allanak. Then they did some stuff to the forage code, and I think the cave was destroyed in the volcano. Cave rooms in other areas don't seem to spawn slate anymore.

You can get the unenchanted figurine for much cheaper if I recall. You can usually tell which one is unenchanted if one is like... 100 sid and the other is 100000.

>forage artifact
To find a soapstone figurine. You'll need decent component crafting to charge this badboy up. (you'll likely fail 50% of the time, at best)
I don't believe I ever found the kaleidoscope, though I've heard several times it's in Cenyr.
Slate is easy: >forage stone
Dragon statue could be craftable, not certain.

That's also a Carru spawn, so be careful.

On a related note - anyone know where to get lockpicks?

You can buy them in the 'rinth.
You can kill tusk rats or some other critter in the sewers below 'nak to get these small scaley thingies you can wear as earrings. They're also weak picks.
Once you branch pick making, you can make the long, slender bone pick. I think those are some of the best.
