Especially four, since you can have maximum of 3 pinches affecting you. 4th one wont do anything.

IF you get the message the whatever slashes at your but your cuirass gets in the way, or someone blow is absorbed by your cool looking collar, is that a defensive failure for skill up purposes?

I always thought this meant that you hit but that the damage was low enough that it was stopped by armor. So, it's not a miss just too low of damage. I could be wrong though.

I'd agree with snorpborp's assessment. Those are the result of high armor and/or low strength, but probably no more of a miss than a parry or block.

Kind of a weird question. Is it better to skill up against a more skilled opponent than you or with someone that's more or less the same level? Or does it make a difference? It kinda seems like you want a more skilled opponent because you'll tend to miss or get blocked more, etc.

Though the issue you'll have is unless there is something in it for them, the "stronger" opponent is not going to get much out of training with you, so why would they bother?

That doesn't matter, unless... Skilled opponents hit harder which gives you a better chance to raise your defense. It's all about agility and misses for raising skills, though.

At lower levels, it is okey for both sparring partners to be equal-ish in skill. This means you will miss them and increase your weapon skills, and yet you will still get hit, which will improve your defense. Their hits wont incur too damage, so the session can continue.
If you're fighting a more skilled opponent, then you will miss them which will improve your skills and you will get hit. But those hits will end the session very very quickly.

I know this has probably been mentioned before but does the first miss you get when using a weapon count? Or is it a thing you're better off to try for multiple misses? Does a miss only sometimes tick up, and does the timer not start until you actually tick up a number?

I'm under the impression that wep skills skill up on on a roll, not one fail = skill up. This is actually always the case with your wisdom affecting the chance for skill up iirc (with wep skills having a lower chance of skill up than others). And yes the "timer" "starts" when you actually skill up, nothing to do with fails per se hope that helps

To my knowledge only wep skills but all this is only coming from reading the stuff on this forum so others will know more than I

To my knowledge only wep skills but all this is only coming from reading the stuff on this forum so others will know more than I The way I understood it weapon skills work on a fail minus your wisdom. Example: Amos is fighting a verrin hawk, on his first miss there's a roll to see if his slashing skill goes up one. If the roll is a success he goes up one point (not sure if it starts over on his next miss, but it would explain why sometimes people skill up faster sometimes). If he fails he has to wait 60 minutes minus his wisdom for another opportunity for another "skill up" roll. He'll continue to fight at the same level he started until his timer's up again just for the opportunity to skill up again. I get the feeling though that some of the softer skills don't quite work that way. Some work on a one fail=one notch, some might work the timer, but the target number is much lower than the weapon TN so you see results faster. I've only just started experimenting with this kind of stuff myself, but that's the impression I get from all of the stuff I read.

The -VERY- few times I have roleplayed drunk while sparring I got some fucking snarky holier-than-thou vibes because everyone knew what I was doing dont you know it's entirely unrealistic for mercenaries to drink/be drunk on duty especially in a harsh and depressing world where alcohol is the only escape and there's no social taboos or mores against it??? Reading this post I wanted to point out its not out of character to train drunk either. I lived in Japan, we would do 'Sake Waza' basically we drank a rice bowl filled with Sake, got fucked up, then went down to the mats and trained. The entire purpose, -was to train while hindered- so we fight better when we are not.

I'm curious. Were you training for some kind of sport thing, or military thing? Or just for the fun of it?
