Thanks everyone. This is very helpful. This brings up something I've wondered about though. How do wilderness sneak and mounts interact? Can rangers sneak up on something while leading a mount? Can you sneak while riding? Seems cheesy but I could see justifications for it.

So far as I know, the mount sneaks with you? I feel like I have snuck up on animals with a mount before, leading it, not riding it. But, I am not totally sure.

If you have halfway decent stats and gear, grey scrabs should not be much of a problem out of the gate. Just practice up your ride until you can ride no-handed (journeyman - doesn't take long at all), stay mounted, and USE A SHIELD to make up for your lack of parry. I'd bet you stand better than a 50/50 chance of winning that fight. My experience has been that grey scrabs are significantly weaker than their black counter parts, who I've seen hit for 50 damage with a good roll.
Don't go too far west or south of Nak though, or you'll hit spiders, beetles, and black scrab. There's no real compelling reason for anyone to fuck around past the obsidian and glass deposits out that way.
Edited to Add: You can sneak while mounted. I can't really speak to how effective it is or is not though. I think they will start sneaking if you lead them on foot.
As far as desert sneak on a mount not being realistic (as it seems some poster hinted at) I would beg to differ. If you're trying to sneak up behind someone and sap them, sure maybe. But IMO desert sneaking over a distance is more about finding hard ground that will leave less of a trail, riding behind dunes and through canyons where someone half a mile away won't spot you, and the like.

Any hints on raising scan? Is there any npc's hidden that would auto check my scan? Depends on where you are. Around Allanak, there are jozhal a bit northeast of the eastern gate. They'll flee and try to hide again if you step into the same room they're in. Good for skilling up your tracking skill as well. Careful about herding them over the edge of that canyon. You could always spring for 'Rinth, if you wanna go that way. Lots of hidden NPCs there too, on either side (guaranteed two NPCs on Hathor's way, for convenience). There are also a lot of hidden NPCs in the grasslands east of Tuluk. I think there is a hidden NPC or two in the alleys of Red Storm, the southwestern one for sure. Dangerous with a new character though. That bald dude will fuck you up. May be more, never really played there much. Same for Luir's, I can't really think of any hidden NPCs around there.

Any hints on raising scan? Is there any npc's hidden that would auto check my scan? Actually, there are lots of ways to skill up scan with the addition of rats in the city. Rats often hide too, the only problem is there is almost always some asshole trying to kill them. But rats are in every city. Red Storm: you don't have to go into the alley to find someone hidden. There's hidden guards all over the place. Tuluk: besides the rats, there are a lot of hiding animals both east and west. the best thing to do is to buddy with someone that can see them though and have them point them out to you. Or...it might sound silly, but it's good RP, find a sneaky and play "hide and seek" with them.

Tuluk - There used to be a half-elf outside the Kuraci bar. But the above is the best advice.

I've always been hesitant to say this, but that hidden pc outside of the kuraci bar has looong been gone, probably since before the first time someone posted that info.

I haven't played since before the Volcano HRPT which supposedly wiped out the goudra, but goudra are pro for raising scan if you're a ranger and your blindfighting

I kind of find them a crap shoot though because they come out of being hidden really fast sometimes.

All the fighting classes get master weapon skills. War/Asn/Rng. Just a long road to get there.

Anybody have any tricks for ranger's listen/scan. Thinking of doing one soon here but heard those skills are a hellish nightmare to raise.
