I can say with certainty that Armageddon staff intend to create a new game. Since it doesn't have a name yet, I will call it Armageddon 2 2, since it's staff's second attempt at creating Armageddon 2.
I will use this thread to report things I know for certain, or with near enough certainty that I feel comfortable exposing it here. If I'm wrong about some of this stuff, I will just eat shit and say so later. This is more-or-less arranged in the order I learned about each item over the last few weeks. Feel free to discuss.
A staff-only #evennia channel was created on the Armageddon Discord server on or around October 22, 2024. Evennia is a MU* engine written in Python that uses Django for database implementation and web integration. It's a good system but it requires a lot of customization to get a functioning RPI, so programming must be in the very early stages. From what I've heard, the Armageddon programmers are still going through the Evennia tutorial.
Staff moved discussion of the new game to a new Discord server, for better operations security, once they learned that people were able to see the creation of new channels on the old Armageddon Discord server that weren't supposed to.
The staff intend to create an RPI. Not a MUSH, hack-n-slash, or any other kind of text-based game.
Usiku created an RPI survey and had staff share it in places, including the Armageddon server and Reddit. It was also shared with players of Untold Dawn. The results of that survey are at anonpaste.io/share/fe4fb7ccf5
Staff are in the exploratory stages of trying to figure out what is important to implement, in terms of rules, internal policies, actual game features, and how to go about writing the setting.
Internal policies: staff are discussing how to handle the shadowboard and how to handle people who troll the game, which they see as one and the same. They are also discussing what player rules are still needed. Halaster and Eurynomos did not like that Usiku and Valkyrja posted here. They are planning to implement a policy that would ban staff that are known to have posted here, and bar players from becoming staff if they ever posted here.
Rules: The Season One PK guidelines are on the chopping block because staff worry it made players too afraid of PKing others when it made IC sense to do so. To use a direct quote I've seen, there has been some discussion about rolling back "some of the restrictive rules added in the last few years". No other details are confirmed, but there are only so many rules that this can be about.
Actual game features: staff are discussing how to implement Armageddon's existing features in the Evennia engine while also enhancing them. They are also discussing the value of permadeath or lack thereof, and possible alternatives, such as a system that would allow players to choose between maiming or death if they are reduced to -10 HP by an NPC. They also have talked about modernizing old systems, like the clunky crafting system. They have also talked about procedural generation to create certain dungeon areas for RPTs, as well as using LLMs such as ChatGPT to add variance to the room descriptions of sprawling wilderness areas.
Setting: staff are discussing how to reimplement Zalanthas. It seems that staff would like to preserve Zalanthas as an intellectual property and remake the game with it. A lot of this discussion is about how to implement a hypothetical Season Two, an Armageddon 2 2 Season 2 if you will, under the assumption that Season One's events happened off-screen in a reasonably predictable fashion, and the timeline is at some unspecified future point. They are trying to figure out what the new world should look like, with most on the team favoring getting rid of Allanak and Tuluk while keeping the setting's low-empathy harshness.
The staff are considering a blanket unban of all previously banned players and reinviting all banned players back to the new game as a way to reconcile with the shadowboard and end what they perceive as trolling. From what I have heard, during a voice conversation about this, one staff member asked whether Shalooonsh would be unbanned, to which Eurynomos answered: "Everyone means everyone," before backtracking and saying there could be some exceptions to this plan.
Halaster and Eurynomos elected to vote Usiku off of the team without discussion with other staff. As far as I can tell, this was done as a response to her posting here, as shenzi. Valkyrja resigned from staff after posting screenshots of the staff forum last month. Serakin, who was recruited onto staff a few days before the game closed, has been completely left out of the new project. Additionally, Nessalin is on the team, who previously posted updates to the game as Zorkbob.
