The woke Armageddon staff team continues on its vibrant word policing into 2020. Just as the word "necker" was deemed too problematic in relation to the forbidden n-word, so too has our gaggle of generous griots determined that the term "Gypsy" is not to be used for the Tan Muarki; oh, and they're coming back, by the way.
This role call was posted May 2nd, drawing in much speculation.
And today the 7th, the following staff decree hath been made.
Distrust them! Persecute them! Murder and Corrupt and Betray them! But GOD FORBID we call them Gypsies, no -- that's too far. We wouldn't want any of the gypsies that play Armageddon to get offended. Or, for that matter, all of the outrageously WOKE personas that get offended on behalf of others. For our next move, I suggest banning the term "stump" for dwarves; and replaicng it with "vertically challenged". And gith should be outright removed, as woke culture has determined that savage and raiding races such as orcs are a cruel stereotype of black people.
Despite peer-reviewed academics citing studies that 'racism' in media doesn't produce 'racism' in reality, the brilliant and eminent minds of the Armageddon staff team have decreed that this word — gypsy — is no longer to be uttered. Unfortunate allusions to reality. I suppose the sorcerer-kings themselves should be removed from Armageddon: Tektolnes's and Muk Utep's insistence on the master human race reminds me of the fascistic brownshirt persecution of Nazi Germany. The man in the high castle / pyramid is Hitler! And Templars are merely the SS. The Magickers are persecuted, hunted down and forced to wear black gems in the south or outright euthanized in the north — reminds you of a certain Final Solution, doesn't it? We must police the thoughts and minds of our playerbase with vocabulary limitation, or else Armageddon is going to churn out generation after generation of radicalized fascists! Staff, I am available for the producer role whenever you're prepared to disappear Nessalin for his historical participation in these thought-crimes.

Bonus round. Thought police comes for player for using the term "longneck", to similar to "necker" for the staff's tastes.

The fact that they're removing the term "gypsy" might mean they're paring down the absolutely corny, gas-station romance novel tier aesthetic of the Tan Muarki in general, to which I'm thankful for. It also just makes no sense to have in a setting that is rife with 99% fictional ethnicities/races. It'd be like having a group of tribals that people called "abos". Sorry if you get all Free Speech Warrior over this you're being a faggot.

Sorry if you get all Free Speech Warrior over this you're being a faggot. I'll accept the premise. But this just leads me to wonder further. The Tan Muarki / Gypsies were done and over with. They had a volcano dropped on them, they had their private compounds sealed away, they had their metal items hidden in rooms nobody can get to. Why bring them back; and why change a dead, apparently tainted (in some respects) idea when any decent author would produce something new?
Sure, Gypsies were full of rancid stereotypes: that reflects the piss poor strategy of Nyr and co. at the time, unable to produce a decent narrative without throwing in sophomoric tropes (see the scatological fetish that still pervades the game). Why bring them back? Why bring back the "abos", in this case, and go, "No it's fine now! They don't snort petrol like they used to! You can't call them abos anymore!" Anyone with a decent bit of creativity would, as it's been suggested on the GDB, reincarnate the Tan Muarki into something else. Maybe a different tribe altogether absorbed the Gypsies after the volcano-drop. Maybe the new tribe has its own fantasy-valid quirks and non-offensive narrative mechanisms to play with. But to bring back this wholly derivative concept and then try to white-wash it, put some spackle on a concept: why is the staff team digging around in the sewer of abandoned ideas for a turd they can polish? Why not produce something that isn't inherently soiled?
I'll give you my reasoning. I think they're intending to exploit the "nostalgia". It's the only reasoning I can think of that makes any sense. But even then, there's the shadow of Tuluk just sitting there -- not a spoiled concept, and it's just waiting to be opened. I don't get it. I think the staff team has some seriously wrong priorities; and this "soft reboot" of the Tan Muarki exposes it.

Why open another exclusive, closed doors, sponsor-only tribal clan, when there is already basically NO political scene, in the political scene, in the only two major hubs remaining?
The current number of clans are fine. Boring, and in DIRE need of some enabling, so they aren't so same-same and flaccid, but the number of them, are fine. They need more MEAT, so more players want to play in them, so they can actually generate some friction with each other and play out ensuing conflicts. Throwing more, random tribals into the mix, in a game where "tribal" might as well stand for "neutral w/everyone", is only got to make the current clans that much harder to populate.
GMH clan politics are infantile at best because of the Luirs situation, and Allanak, at least the last I saw of it, was basically a lot of sponsor nobles idling away without aides, or support pcs, because nobody wanted to clan up with them. Because they're fucking boring. They're boring to watch. They're boring to be in. They're, usually, death sentences, for good concepts. Borsail especially, historically, has a MASSIVE issue, of either getting their aides killed, or killing their own aides, for something to do.
Why open another iso/exclusive sponsor role snowflake tribe, and further drain players from already struggling spheres, when we're already bursting at the seams, with tribals of every variety?

I can agree with you there. Every time I've been on during peak there's been a solid sixty something players. There's plenty of opportunity to crack open a long-dead sphere of the game's dusty ol' casket. But when I think of "closed things I want to see come back", Tan Muark isn't even the tenth thing that comes to mind. Wanting something Tuluk-related seems to be a prevailing opinion in the pbase. The least I can hope for is that this is a one time thing and after the four or so PCs die, they don't open up Tan Muark into a free-app tribe like al'Seik/Arabet.

Bebop makes a great point gristle. A great point that is unsurprisingly followed with a sycophantic retort.
Quote Tenacious @ gdb.armageddon.org/index.php/topic,52143.msg1046234.html#msg1046234 This guy builds a strawman of odd proportions. "Why are you against opening the Tan Muarki? Look, staff could open THIS OTHER CLAN HERE that would also be as mediocre as opening the Tan Muarki, see this hypothetical worst-case lazy scenario. Why are you complaining?" And I know it's a ludicrous jump of association, but I can't help but think of this thread of logic being something equivalent to 100% expecting a mother to drop their baby after it's born. Opening the Wyverns and then the Wyverns becoming "mercs for hire, riding out with the Byn and the AoD on constant patrols that make very little sense for what they are" — even in this moonshot scenario, it betrays a severe lack of trust in the stewardship of the current administration. The more I think about it, the more I realize it's like expecting a mother to drop her baby. What is with all the baby drops!?

There are definitely arguments for changing the jarringly-close-to-RL parts of the Tan Muark, so I'm not really against kiboshing the 'gypsy' term. It was a clan conceived in the 90s by teenagers and left largely untouched as the game evolved into a proper RPI. Any notions of doing this in order to avoid hurting Romani players' feelings are of course silly, I'm not sure why staff even needs to bring that up. Just explain that the tribe itself wasn't Zalanthan enough, which is definitely true.
When they banned 'necker,' they banned a specifically Zalanthan term whose etymology can be traced back through the game's history, and they did it explicitly because it sounded too much like the n-word. Aside from the occasional moron having their elf PC speak like Lil Wayne, there is no connection or resemblance between Zalanthan elves and RL people of African descent, so that was a dumb decision. Adjusting the Tan Muark to fit the game's setting is nowhere near as faux-woke than that.
